Pork fat leftovers?

(Amanda ) #1

I made a large batch of pulled pork in my crockpot and it was a reallllllly fatty piece. The large fat checks were so big, they didn’t even end up melting into the pulled pork so I pulled out about 2 cups worth of fat hunks. (It was already oily enough that my non-keto friends were kind of grossed out!)

So, can I do something with this leftover fat??

Yeah, eat it. It’s delicious

I second the motion, the best part!

I save it in the fridge and cook with it later especially eggs gives them lots of flavor when I run into bacon that’s too lean and also save the fat left over from more fatty bacon to! I cook with it on very very low heat, just let it simmer, it will fully cook anything!

Putting some bacon fat into hamburgers today, along with some minced garlic and Worcestershire sauce. Once in a while I will have a really good burger at a restaurant, but hard to beat making them at home…

Damn you @OldDoug, I was planning on fasting today, but I have all of those things on hand, and now that’s what I want.

Ooh i love the hamburger idea. I actually have some lean turkey frozen from before I was keto so I could “Fix” that! LoL!!

put the fat in a roaster and and put in the oven at a low temp, it will melt down into a great cooking grease also. But mixing into the burger meat sure sounds like a great idea, but i would cook that in a pan so can save the fat that melts out.

I like this idea! What is a roaster?

a pan that goes in a oven

Yep, it’s called rendering. Doing this to pork fat will get you lard, doing it to beef will yield tallow. (Sad side note, I did this to a huge hunk of beef fat on a piece of brisket and the remaining solids looked soo good, like pork crackling. They weren’t. At all. Blech.)
