PLZ don't hate if this has been answered relentlessly...but NON WEIGHT LOSS BENEFITS?

(Erica) #1

I’ve seen the lists that come up on google of “benefits of ketosis other than weight loss” but my MAIN question is…can those benefits be had from a LCHF diet, without ketosis? Ketosis is obviously a great weight loss diet but…WHY SHOULD AN OTHERWISE HEALTHY PERSON (NO WEIGHT/HEALTH ISSUES) CONSIDER KETO?? I seriously apologize if this is in the forum or easily found on google, but I cannot seem to find good info. to answer this question.

WHAT ARE THE MAIN REASONS to be here if I don’t have any health/weight issues??? (I have done keto on and off and feel good, but considering I didn’t have any complaints with my body before, wonder if I should be doing it)

Is anyone else a healthy weight, or maybe underweight, person without any major health issues and if so, why are you here?? I am so intrigued by continuing keto but feel a little…out of place in most keto groups :grimacing:

The energy levels are incredible, and fasting is much easier to do

I’ve struggled with my weight and have managed to lose it with Keto.
I enjoy eating this way, I love that I can eat high fat.
I’ve met what’s called an acceptable goal weight but I am pushing my limits to reach an extra few kg.
Regardless, I won’t stop eating this way when I do meet my goals.
Why would I go back to a lifestyle that made me sick, when this one has made me so much happier and healthier?
Personal choice.

My story: l was a fat child and fat teenager. I’m 5’10 so l was always sticking out. Tried to loose weight and yo-yo dieted for years. Almost gave myself an eating disorder to pair it with an extremely low self esteem. In my late 20’s l discovered low carb diets and lost weight first time in my life without starving myself. Then l discovered Keto and felt lean yet strong. Went to paleo for maintenance for 6 years. During those l never touched “carbage” and discovered that l actually love sports but a little bit of weight creeped up and l felt tired all the time. Now l’m back to keto for:
Mental clarity, mental stability, to eliminate anxiety/depression, to improve my gym performance (resistance and lean muscle gain), improved digestion, no more migraines or bloating or IBS or UTI’s. Also lessened symptoms of post nasal drip, tonsil stones, general improvement in immune system. No dental cavities in years.
Now l’m able to fast for benefits of autophagy to strengthen my bones ( l have bones of a 70 y.o., and a titanium implant in my lower spine) and tighter skin ( not mentioning saving the time and money ).
Last reason: l love cooking and cooking with fat it the best, tastiest thing in the world!

If you have no weight issues, have no health issues and are quite happy with your lifestyle as it is, then I guess there are no reasons to change what you’re doing.

Some here will undoubtedly say that by adopting the keto lifestyle, you will be safe guarding yourself from future problems with weight/health. I will let them put that point across.

There some long term health benefits of this way of eating, also the brain works better on ketones. For long term health if all you did was stop eating an and all grains then I would say you have no reason to take yourself into ketosis. However it does make a few things easier to do, and if you ever have to think the ketones can help.
The process of healing your body can happen during a bit longer(over 24 hours) fasts and this is much easier to do as a fat burner than a carb burner.

Side note: me talking about fasting, wow how things have changed. I used to think any missed meal was sure death.

I choose to do it because it’s safe and simple for my food phobic brain, and the only way of eating that always made sense to me (did low carb 20 yrs ago). I am eating less and spending money. I don’t suffer now from so many little ailments that stack up without a person realizing it (low blood sugar, being irritable and anxious, craving for junk food, indigestion, acne, fatigue.)

I started this way of eating this time to reduce a creeping A1C level but stay for all of the other benefits. I don’t know if I’ve lost weight, but I’ve lost inches and amazingly the skin is snapping back unlike ever before on a low calorie diet.

I also have multiple myeloma so I’m concerned with really feeding my body so it can repair and maintain bone health.

Often discussed here - look for threads on NSV ‘non-scale victories’ or keto complaints department (a humorous look at keto benefits). Personally, I get a big reduction in aches and pains and inflammatory symptoms when on keto. Like, I haven’t had a bad cellulitis attack or headaches and joint pains in ages.
