Hi all,
I have been Keto for six months and doing well, and loving the WOE. I have a friend who keeps telling me that the coconut oil that I put in my bulletproof coffee every morning is bad for me. I have tried to find some articles or science to let her know she is wrong but cannot seem to find any. Can anyone post me a link to science or articles so I can (sorry a bit rude here) SHUT her up!!!
Thanks
Please point me in the right direction
Have you asked her to show YOU proof? I’m sure someone will be able to help you, as I don’t have any off hand, but coconut oil is pretty universally accepted as a good fat even between rival diet camps such as vegans and Keto folks.
I know there was research done using coconut oil in the mid 1900’s, before anyone figured out trans fats. I think this reach is some of what was used to justify saying saturated fat (and coconut oil) was evil.
It is my understanding oils used were not “virgin”, i.e. they used a process that made trans fats to extract the coconut oil. So, in the light of more complete knowledge, they were trans fat studies not saturated fat studies.
So your friend my be right about coconut oil that has been hydrogenated, or otherwise treated in a way that creates trans fats. This isn’t the case for cold pressed/virgin coconut oil.
that’s all based on the faulty premise that saturated fat is bad for us. None of the research that shows that has been able to be replicated, meaning its all junk science.
Whereas there have been several studies that show reducing cholesterol (which is what saturated fat is linked to) actually raises rates of heard disease. They talk about this in 2ketodudes podcast #119 with Nina Teicholz. I can’t recall the studies offhand, but I’m reading Nina’s book right now and I’m sure it will reference it there as well.
Yeah, and I think a lot of the early research on saturated fat happened before trans fats were understood. So they thought the results were from saturated fat, but really were caused by trans fats.
I think that may have been the PURE study and the Framingham study… Or the one on the vets in the mental hospital…
I e found it’s usually pointless to try to convince someone of something, even when it’s a 100% factual thing.
I once argued till I was blue on the face to an older gentleman I worked with that corn oil was still 100% fat. That indeed all oil was 100% fat.
He absolutly insisted corn oil was low in fat if not fat free since corn is very low in fat.
I even brought in a book I had that listed food nutrition of thousands of foods (this was back before the Internet was at our fingertips), and showed him the oil section.
He STILL didnt believe me.
Sometimes it’s best to let people be with their ignorance.
Funny you should say this as she comments all the time on how good I am looking!!!
Yes, this is my understanding and I only ever use cold pressed or recently I have been using MCT.
Thank you I knew I had heard it somewhere just could not remember. I am reading her book at the moment.
Thak you - that is the article I was looking for, your the best!
Yep totally agree but she has been chipping away at me for some time now, despite me feeling and looking good. Once last time then silence will win.
thanks everyone.
. . . paid for by American vegetable oil companies trying to keep coconut oil from threatening their sales.
There! All fixed!
