Please explain a fat fast?

Can someone explain what is a fat fast, and the point of the fast? And the difference between a water fast?
It’s winter here and I enjoy eating OMAD, I did start to fast but I haven’t eaten a lot of food lately. This is working for me right now.
The only thing I am drinking throughout the day is 80ml of espresso at a time with a drop of cream for taste. I have about 4-6 of these at work, the last one roughly 3;30pm.
Am I fat fasting by doing that?

EDIT afterthought: what’s the point of fat fasts for people who are fat adapted? I thought I am supposed to want to use my fat stores rather than dietary fat I am consuming.

I would call it a fat fast, because you are ingesting fats and not just non-caloric beverages like water, tea, and black coffee. But, I’m not sure it ultimately really matters what anyone calls it. I’m not saying you (or anyone) shouldn’t ask the question, I can see how categorizing can be helpful sometimes. But I don’t think of the various ways that we fast as clean categories, more like they exist on a continuum and we draw (sometimes kind of arbitrary) lines in order to give them names. What you’re doing might be a fat fast but the effect such a tiny amount of fat has on aspects of your physiology might be more similar to someone doing a water fast, and much less similar to someone doing a higher-intake fat fast. If that makes sense… Just my humble opinion.

I think you’re right. For me, it’s just the cream in my morning coffee because I don’t like it black. At IDM they refer to stuff like that as “training wheels” to help you until you can get to water fasting, if that’s where you want to be.

Fat doesn’t cause an insulin response like carbs and protein. If you keep your fat calories under (I think Dr. Fungs number) 500 kcals daily you are supplying enough digestive fuel to feed the brain without relying on stored fats and still being in enough of a deficit to get the weight loss advantages of a fasted state. Keep in mind though, if your goal is Autophagy that consuming fat will shut that down. This is where the water fast comes into play.
Your routine is a low fat fast agenda and one that I choose also. Not going to give up my creamed coffee.:joy:

Thank you

Here is a good explanation of the Atkins diet fat fast. Good for kickstarting you into ketosis, and dropping a few pounds, but not for the long term. https://ketodietapp.com/Blog/lchf/Complete-Guide-to-Fat-Fast

Dana Carpender also wrote a book of recipes for a fat fast: https://www.carbsmart.com/fat-fast-cookbook.html

I think we should start our own support thread called “I’m still putting cream in my coffee, but that’s all I ate today, I know it’s not a true fast, don’t bug me” fast.

Lol.

Starting my fbnraf (fast but not really a fast) with an iced coffee, no liquid sugar, from McD’s. It’s not HWC but they are only $1 so that’s what I’m going with. We also have a Tim Hortons and Starbucks near by.

What is it in it if it’s not HWC? curious

18% most likely (coffee cream - they don’t have whipping cream at McDonalds)

Can you (or anyone here) explain what eating fat while in fasting ketosis does to blood chemistry? For example, I have a lower BP and a higher keto level without coffee+fat. I stay in ketosis But “feel” better… I’ve tried coffee+salt and water+salt which helps But not nearly as quickly or to the same extent. I must conclude that the BP effect is tied to explanation of retained salt by the kidneys signaled by insulin. I can’t measure an insulin spike at home … is that what I’m seeing with the dip in ketosis? Any explanation along the lines of biochemical effects is appreciated. I’ve done some study in biochem and can handle (at least look up) enzymes, signal transduction and metabolic pathways. Thanks for any info. BTW, Does Dr. Fung hang out here! Thanks from a noob! Best regards, Mike

Well one day a week, I’m giving up my 22oz morning mug of double strength coffee AND the cream. As much as I enjoy it, I can miss one day a week. What I can’t miss, is the caffeine ! If I miss my morning caffeine, I will get an ugly headache every freaking time !
My answer ? I pop a couple of 200mg caffeine tablets  granted, I think my typical “one pot condensed into one 22oz mug” of coffee probably holds closer to 1000mg of caffeine… But 400mg seems to be enough to curb the headache :slightly_smiling_face:

Noooo but that would be very cool if he did, hehe.

Welcome to the forum @lisanke

Mike, you would get your question noticed and answered if you were to make a separate thread asking this. I don’t know the answers to your questions myself, but I am sure there are people that do.

I am just not sure anyone will notice it tagged on to this thread, so I suggest that you make your own thread and ask =).

Susan, Thanks for your welcome and reply! I’ll do as you suggest when I get a spare moment. Keto and especially fasting has worked fantastic for me and I want to understand how to tweek the process so I can help others deal with a few of the nit and gritty issues! Thanks so much. Best regards, Mike

There is a second fat fast cookbook now.
