Planning a massive unhealthy Christmas carb up

What should I expect?

(Keto in Katy) #2

Feeling like shit, most likely. Merry Christmas!

Ouch. Have solidly done keto for 4 months. Are you thinking headaches, bloating, nausea, GI issues what? Like the flu??

(Cruzer) #4

Probably a headache and just feeling crappy, that definition is hard to describe as we are all different. When I go off plan I usually wake up with a massive headache and lethargy. Depends on how bad it is, I find alcohol is the worst for me.

You should be fine.

The more sugar you eat, the more vitamin C you need. This is noted by Gary Taubes and why (traditional) Inuits needs less vitamin C. Take 1-2g of Vitamin C in the morning hours before eating maybe, so there is less competition by the sugar.

If you are going to drink carbs, dilute it if you can.

Eating carb together with fat help you store more of the fats. But at the sametime you don’t want too much of an insulin spike (fiber supplement maybe, but at the sametime there are arguments against using them). Dilemma I guess.

Not a drinker, but gluten sensitive. Gives me heartburn.

(Mike W.) #7

Why?

#8

If you are gluten sensitive I would avoid until the end. I did a weekend on purpose after about 5 months. I am gluten sensitive. The first day was ok. Spent most of the second day in the bathroom. Felt hungover even though I had no alcohol. Was tired and wanted to go to bed early. Although I ate everything, the only thing I really enjoyed was the sushi. I did not even want the pizza I was planning to have on Sunday. Was so happy to fast Monday, ate almost nothing until Tuesday

Myketoaf - Holiday food is largely carbs. Thanksgiving was pretty controlled and sad. Even

Lost weight. I understand that for many keto isWOL but as a new convert, I am hoping there is some occasional flexibility.w

I know there will be prime rib, maybe a salad. Everything else will be simple carbs, including the dish my family expects mer to bring. Thanks sapphire, good advice

Have carbs, bring carbs but make them without gluten

Helpful advice dukeman. I have some C around.

Don’t forget it’s not healthy to be on keto all the time, you want to get off it once a week or two otherwise if you limit carb for too long your body may think you are starving, this can cause the liver to induce gluconeogenesis and drive up blood sugar as a feedback mechanism (see: Mercola’s Fat for Fuel), eating some carb at this time will actually release insulin and lowers the blood sugar. Although the idea is healthy carbs, probably not cakes.

(Laurie) #16

You’re joking, right?

(Mike W.) #17

Wth is a healthy carb? Also please site where you are referencing this drivel about it “being healthy to not be in Keto all the time”…

(5c42cb62e5c022d313b2) #18

Bunny- looks amazing !!

This is not correct according to Fung. Reducing insulin is what allows the body to release fat. Your insulin increasing shuts that down. I would hate to be kicked out of ketosis once a week, that would completely derail this diet.

As for starving, assuming you are either eating sufficient fat or are overweight and have fat to lose, your body will use that for fuel and will not feel like it is starving. It only feels like it is starving when you are not fat adapted and reduce calories

Yes I agree with everything you said.

The thing I’m referring to is when you keep your blood sugar low for such a long period of time and the liver could react by making glucose especially if you are doing a lot of activities. In this specific situation, stimulating a little insulin causes blood sugar to go down (insulin’s role is to transfer glucose into cells).

I stand by my statement that it’s probably not normal for human to be in ketosis permanently. Depend on your health it may work better for some to stay in ketosis longer or short. But hey, if you feel good with staying in ketosis long term then stick with it.

As for sources, see page 189 from the book Fat for Fuel, in the section titled, “Use feast-famine cycling to reap the benefits of fat burning over the long haul without feeling deprived.”

It’s probably not allowed to copy and paste the content of the book, a summary is “insulin suppresses gluconeogenesis, which happens with prolonged fasting or prolonged nutritional ketosis as the body tries to preserve it’s fat fuel”.
