What are the opinions on which is better? I have access to actual sea salt that is not “processed” just dried sea water.
Pink salt or sea salt?
I would say a mix of both as both have different qualities - I use both Celtic grey and Himalayan pink.
Note there are several qualities of sea salt, a grey one but also a white one, “Fleur de sel”, very white but likewise unprocessed.
Why not both? We have at least 5 kinds of salt here. Each has its place in the world.
I’d go with either what you find cheaper or whatever you have a preference for (I have both because I found pink salt cheap one time and one of the kids just wanted it because it’s pink).
The pink salt tends to have a bit less sodium, but that may vary. I’m also lead to believe that the “extra minerals” it has are in too trace of amounts to make any difference. So, it’s up to you, but you aren’t likely getting a significant benefit from pink unless you really like the color.
I think the trace minerals do matter but you’re right the amounts are small so that could be debatable I guess. A lot of experts do recommend “good” salts though, not only for what it contains in trace amounts but also for what it doesn’t contain. Some say micro-plastics are an issue (The Salt Fix) but I’m not sure I’m sold. Anti-caking agents on the other hand do concern me. I take salt directly on my tongue a few times a day as needed, when I use “good” salt (Redmond Real, Pink, Celtic) I feel fine, when I use the cheap Morton “Sea” salt crap I get heartburn and a stomach ache. Of course everyone is different but that was enough to convince me. It’s also worth noting that buying “expensive” salt is probably gonna cost you less than $5 per month.
I’m very happy to pay the price for good quality salt with it being so important. Cheapest is not always best.
I got Redmans real salt, which is one of the brands recommended by Dr DiNicolantonio of The Salt Fix due to the additional mineral content found in it. I got it from my local health food store and Amazon has it too. I got mine for $4.99.
Of course I also found this one but I think I’d get some strange looks wearing it around my neck. Not sure why though…
Yes, they also sell for livestock. If you want to ball out you can get a 50lb bag of Salt from them
Yes. I was just being silly with my kids. It just happened to be from Redmonds, which I had just bought their real salt for people earlier that day.
Just set it on the counter, if you find yourself hanging out and licking it, so what!
I recently bought a 25 lb bag of Redmond real salt for $80 shipped through Amazon, It’s still a lot more then the cheapest salt bought by the pound but it is much less than buying Redmond in small shakers, I expect to use 5 lbs/year or about $16/year. Stored dry salt keeps well a long time. It’s already a few million years old ought to be ok for 5 more.
I saw this as well, saved the 10lb bucket to my shopping list on amazon, I might just go for 80!
I’ve got about 12 different types of salt. As said already they will have different mineral contents so a mix is best. One thing for sure they all taste different. Some taste ‘saltier’. Himalayan pink had a nice flavour. Murray river salt from Australia and Iranian blue salt are nice. The worst I have is one from Pakistan and it stinks.
Our co-op sells Redmonds in bulk for less than Amazon. My next purchase will be from there
I tend to agree with this.
Anyone really think one salt is better than another ?
Does your salt come with mineral content details ?
I think I will try the pink Himalayan because of its less salty taste. I like fine grains as I find the chunks too salty
I ditched my Pink Salt and I’ll tell ya why…I’m one of those that likes the taste of salt over anything sweet, have been that way most of my life. So when I read on the forum people recommending to take a few grains and just let them melt in your mouth to curb hunger, well that was right up my alley! Yay, Keto! So I pull out a couple of small pinch bowls, one for the desk, one at the stove and take a pinch when I need one. Then I come across a big grain that won’t dissolve! WTF I mean it’s sizable and clear and smacks to me of plastic! I spit it out and think it’s a fluke, until it happened 2 more times! Always about the same size crystal and won’t dissolve. Then it dawns on me, that this salt was meant to go in my grinder and then I get pissed! I would have never known if I had not just eaten it out of hand so I potentially have been grinding up plastic in my food! Never again. I stick to my Celtic Sea Salt and a few others I have but Pink is out for me.
