Pili Nuts

#21

I think it comes down to how rare they are. They are only grown in one area of the philipines. Also none of my philipino friends have ever heard of them.

Yikes! This is telling.

  1. I now want macadamia nuts
  2. I canā€™t get bacon fat chocolate out of my head.

Thanks, dude. >.>

Itā€™s impossible for me to buy them, anymore. Once I get them home, they disappear. I live alone, itā€™s a mystery.

(Meeping up the Science!) #26

It wasnā€™t me. This time.

I canā€™t imagine any nut tasting better than macadamias either.

People usually haver either:

More time, less money
OR
More money and less time.

I found recently I LOVE pili nuts, but itā€™s like loving champagne on a beer budget. Hence, my search for a cheaper pili nut.

The first ones I ever tried. Outrageously good; outrageously expensive:
5oz for /$13.80 + $5.95 shipping
https://smile.amazon.com/Sprouted-Pili-Traditional-Style-Coconut/dp/B01M3VAD0L/ref=sr_1_1_s_it?s=grocery&ie=UTF8&qid=1488600906&sr=1-1&keywords=pili+nuts

Cheaper in bulk from their website:
$43.99 + shipping if buy three 5oz bags ($14.63 per pound, not including shipping):

Here is what I tried today. They were skin-on, so it was an experiement to see if I could find a cheaper source. They are raw with skins on. 6oz for $8.58:

Peeling pili nuts:

My experiment was a success, and although a little time consuming, easy.

  1. Bring a pan of water to a boil.
  2. Dump in the pili nuts.
  3. Boil for about 3 or 4 minutes, or until you see the skins loosening.
  4. Set colander/strainer in sink; dump in the blanched nuts.
  5. Run a little cool water over them, then pinch off the skins; the nuts slip right out.
  6. I put them on some paper towel to soaks up the water.
  7. Then put them in a bowl; drizzled a little melted coconut oil over; sprinkled on Himalayan Pink Salt and stirred.

Easy peasy. Yum!
