A few years ago I got a warning from my dentist: I was drinking a ‘sports’ drink daily and he could clearly see it was destructive for my teeth. I was alarmed and stopped using that drink.
Now, being a keto/fasting newbie, I come to appreciate the use of apple cider vinegar (ACV) to make my electrolyte drink more interesting. However, I worried about my teeth, as it is acid. I ordered PH indicator paper to test the PH value of different ACV solutions.
A PH of 5.5 or above seems to be safe (source).
The results are as follows:
- the sports drink: PH=3 (bad for teeth as my dentist told me)
- 15 ml (1 tbsp) ACV in 200 ml (7 oz) water: PH=5 (too low; not very good for teeth)
- 2.5 ml (0.5 tsp) ACV in 200 ml water: PH=6 (not bad for teeth, but not so nice taste)
Then I played around with my electrolyte mix and found myself to be very happy with 10 ml ACV in 200 ml heated electrolyte solution (not shown in picture). PH is somewhere between 5 and 6 according to the indicator paper. YMMV.
