I bought an old school survival book with a pemmican recipe. Been thinking about making it. There is a method with and w/o blueberries, which route would you go? W/O has a longer shelf life supposedly.
Have you ever tried pemmican? Is it nice to eat? I don’t like wasting food or effort.
Pretty simple: Equal amounts by weight of rendered grass fed fat and dried meat. Grind dried meat to as close to powder as possible and combine with liquid rendered fat. Add up to 5% by weight of dried berries if desired.
Press into mold of your choice to remove all air. Cupcake tins will yield 75-80g pucks, each consisting of about 500 calories.
Store wrapped in light proof paper or aluminum foil as well as inside of zip lock bags to keep out air and moisture. Pemmican does not need refrigeration and can be stored for years if shielded from: moisture, light, & direct heat.
It is the ultimate prepper food as it takes up little space and is very calorie dense.
EDIT: in this instance dried meat is not the same as jerky. It should have no seasonings or marinades of any kind. Just plain dehydrated red meat, Beef, venison, buffalo, elk, etc.
@jfricke…how is this eaten? Like cold pate? Or does it need to be combined or warmed up?
Well it was originally made by settlers and I believe Native Americans. Pobably many other somewhat primitive cultures also. So I doubt they microwaved it. My guess it was eaten somewhat like eating off of a beefstick. Just naw off a bite and chew. Or in a more civilized manner cut off a slice and enjoy with a piece of cheese.
