I am pretty new to Keto and I am wondering if peanut butter is ok? Assuming it’s fresh ground with nothing added or should I stick with Almond Butter (not my favorites)
Peanut butter vs almond butter
You may be able to eat peanut butter and still achieve your goals, whatever those goals are. Same with almond butter. You will have to experiment for yourself.
Correct above. It is a legume, and can shut off fat burning. Also haard to stop at juat a small amount! I get flavored Almond butter vanilla my fave)
It works for me, I eat it daily, but not everyone can do this so you have to find what works for you.
I find that almond butter is a bit thin and run off of whatever I put it on. Peanut butter is a bit thicker but still can run if on something warm. So what I’m doing now is mixing whole almonds into the peanut butter jar, that thickens things up nicely. Also, I mainly taste the peanut butter. I eat whole almonds at times so getting them “peanutty” is variation.
One last thing I’m doing lately is to also mix in ground flaxseed with the peanut butter to add some omega 3. In a couple of weeks, I’ll try reversing this and add whole peanuts to the almond butter. I’ll keep the flax).
I would think this will work with any combination of nut / legume butters. Also, maybe chia seeds???
Great idea to cut peanut butter with almonds (or almond butter) to tweak the carbs and nutrients in a positive way while retaining the PB taste.
Like Shortstuff above, I have PB most days. Breakfast is often 2 T. of HWC in my coffee and a tablespoonful of PB, which I lick and nibble from the spoon as I drink my coffee. If I’m hungrier, I’ll instead spread the PB on some breakfast sausage patties.
I love peanuts and peanut butter and most all true nuts and nut butters. All are fine in moderation, but they are easy to over do. I can easily eat a cup or two of peanuts with little satiety signalling.
Instead I eat a tablespoon or two of peanut butter on a couple stalks of celery or kale with lots of salt. I feel more full despite eating far fewer calories.
I have a green smoothie with Peanut Butter, Kale, Chia Seeds, Cucumber, Celery, Avocado, Erythritol and MCT Oil most mornings… Love the way peanut butter and erythritol gets rid of the bitterness of the Kale… Never tried it with Almond butter I might have to give it a try.
I’m lucky enough to be able to eat about 100g of PB each day with no affect on my ketosis
Can you explain how just because it’s a legume it “shuts off fat burning?” It’s very calorie dense and people tend to overconsume because it’s hyperpalatable but legumes don’t inherently just stop fat burning.
I was just researching this, curiosity sake as I have no issue with PB at all, and found this page which i found interesting -
I’ll have to find the article again. It has a chemical effect inside the fat cell that prevents it from being released or something. I’ll post it when I find it.
Always one of my weaknesses! Now Justin’s Vanilla Almond Butter…$$$$. Ouch. But yum.
Nearly anything is OK, it just depends on the amount (with some things doing harm at smaller amounts than others).
I eat peanut butter every day as well, usually mixed with some HWC lately, and maybe some 90% dark chocolate. But, when I get it mixed in, it’s usually less than 1 serving worth. That’s enough for me, and I keep my carbs for the day under 20 with it, and my ketosis seems fine (it does effect ketosis for me, but just not a lot and I’m usually pretty far in ketosis anyway). Now, if I were to eat a cup of peanut butter… well that sounds difficult to begin with but it probably would kick me out of ketosis. I guess I’ve never tested it though.
Anyway, as others have said, tolerance varies by person. Peanut butter and other nuts (and whether you consider peanuts a nut or not, this also applies to nuts) can cause other kinds of problems. There are some that claim sprouting the nuts (or seeds) helps with many of these problems (lowers carbs, changes the chemicals, etc). But anyway, if you want to go for “optimal”, you might want to cut out the peanut butter. If you are looking to get healthy first, you’ll have to figure out if peanut butter is a problem for you, but it’s not a terrible food keto wise.
Look up " Dietary Lectins: Everything you need to know" at Authority Nutrition. I can’t ypload the link.
