I often eat omad and sometimes it’s hard to have enough calories. On those days I supplement with some peanut butter all clean ingredients nothing added. Macros for those days days are on point. I notice though that my weight loss just stalls out. When I kick the peanut butter things start moving again. Anyone notice this also?
Peanut butter stalls me
I’ve read a lot of folks noting this. Maybe because they overindulge but maybe due to subclinical allergy.
I learned early on to be careful with PB. It’s not on Dr. Westman’s “Page four” list, so, it’s a bit of a dance with the devil.
Just look at dem carbs in one tbsp.
Haven’t had this problem myself, and peanut butter and chocolate have long been my go to evening keto desert (I’ll even take just the cheap JIF or store brand stuff with their little bit of added sugar), but I have heard it causes problems for some, and some reasons for that (related to things in the peanuts).
Certainly something to be aware of, it seems like it can cause problems for some people, others not so much in moderation.
Damn, this may be another piece to my -not losing a darn thing- dilemma as well… so glad you posted! I’ve been eating a couple tablespoons full of PB when I feel like I’m going CraZy at night.
Seeds, which is what a nut is (and peanuts, they’re not nuts but they do count as seeds) are generally not great. If you’re eating JIF or Skippy, that’s even worse as it’s not even real nuts for the most part, instead it’s hydrogenated seed oils.
When I used to have a functioning Ketonix Sport (the old, pre 2015 version), I would typically check first where I was at, and often was fairly deep in the Red (believed to be roughly in the range of ketone usage of 3-5 mmol/L or whatever). I wasn’t usually hitting 20g of carbs for the day, anywhere near. The snack of some dark chocolate (85-90%, but half a serving usually) and a tablespoon or two of peanut butter would usually knock me back 2 light flashes, but I’d still be in red anyway, which was still decent nutritional ketosis range.
That’s all to say, that worked for me, and the amounts I eat weren’t enough to cause a problem due to how far into ketosis I already was, but it does have an impact. If you aren’t that far into ketosis, or if you have too much, it’ll be a problem for anyone.
Still, there’s also the general problems with peanuts that many have, as I mentioned above.
I get all my peanut butter from Trader Joe’s. It’s literally peanuts and salt. Thank you everyone for chiming in. I’ll continue to monitor it to see how it goes .
Honestly it’s what I use to add calories when I’m in that 1100 1300 range
Try coconut manna (butter) instead and see how you do. That’s my “go to” for a spoonful of delicious.
What I was hoping still not a great food for humans, despite what many (most?) say.
Peanuts are not nuts or seeds, they are legumes or beans in common speak. This is a big part of why they’re not part of keto eating for most of us. I don’t buy nut butters because they are easy for me to overindulge in and I have just gotten out of the habit. I limit nuts to an occasional ounce or two. I will go weeks without eating them. Very nutrient dense and easy to overdo it and stall your progress. Peanuts have more than double carbs compared to tree nuts. Try substituting Almond, walnut, hazelnut, macadamia butter. @djindy And eating commercial cheap PB is definitely anti keto with it’s hydrogenated fat, sugar and a list of chemical stabilizers and flavor enhancers. Why not get plain old fashioned just peanuts and salt version if you’re going to eat it anyway? It’s junk processed food that we try to eliminate with keto. It’s like eating cookies or crackers off the shelf if the substitute peanut for wheat or corn. Go for minimal ingredient items.
If you’re not hungry don’t just add calories to hit some target. That’s not going to help you lose fat and serves no other benifitial purpose either.
I’m not concerned, been doing this for years.
At one time I was more concerned and went with the organic peanut butters with only peanuts and salt, or almund butters, yada yada. For my context, honestly, it didn’t seem to matter all that much the way I use it.
The point is, it’s not going to be major problem for everyone. All these things are contextual and some people can get away with things others can’t, and certain amounts make differences as well.
That’s not what keto is, that’s just something a lot of people happen to also do while on keto. And that’s all well and good, and I certainly reduce junk a significant amount myself, but keto is simply about getting into ketosis, and perhaps more precisely into nutritional ketosis (for a nutritional ketogenic diet).
Coincidentally while I was waiting for @djindy writing his response this popped on my iPhone screen, more Lancit bullshit about needing to eat more legumes, whole grains, seeds and nuts and less sugar and processed meat and so on.
I would argue there’s more to keto than just getting into ketosis, it’s about supplying your body with the proper food elements and eliminating the unhealthy oils and such to heal your metabolism and arrive at a healthy body composition and metabolic function.
That’s the big difference between eating an Atkins stage one diet for life and eating a ketogenic WOE. The first is just about weight control through ketosis, with all kinds of processed Atkins products being okay (junk food presented as healthy) and the latter about living a healthy lifestyle for metabolic healing and maintenance. The vast majority of us are trying to eliminate questionable processed food. You may have been eating this stuff for years and don’t feel it interferes with your ketosis and you’re probably right.
However hydrogenated fats are basically poison to your body and while you may feel fine eating them they do damage on a cellular level and contribute nothing but havoc and inflammation in your body.
There’s more to health and especially optimal health than just getting into ketosis.
There is not more to keto (ketogenic diet), that’s literally the definition of it (a diet that results in the production of ketones, or ketones above a certain amount if you’d like, i.e. a body in ketosis).
There used to be a stickied thread around here about there not being rules for keto (I somewhat think that went too far, since there are rules: get into ketosis, which generally implies lowering carb intake).
It’s great that a lot of people want to give up junk food and be super healthy. Keto can certainly help with that. That’s not all there is to keto though, and not everyone is concerned.
Indeed, and this is specifically why I have a problem with “keto” as advertised. You can chug soybean oil and eat nothing else and be on “keto”. Too broad for the broad majority.
