Just a light hearted topic

CAN YOU GET CARBS FROM SMELLING?

If I make Vegemite or peanut butter and honey on toast for the kids, and I smell those carb partials… stay with me…will I absorb any?
Another example,
Say your a vegetarian and cooking a pork belly… do you hate yourself for smelling that pure beauty?
Because What ever you smell, you have particals of that in your nose.
Do you think you CAN absorb any? Even an insignificant amount?

:joy::joy:

An interesting concept, personally don’t think can be absorbed… but depending on the carb aroma of the day, I would imagine that there’s a bit more of a risk of being tempted?

The volatile organic compounds that engage the nasal receptors aren’t carbohydrates, are they? I always thought they were esters, which are a different kind of beastie.

God, I hope not.

Does smelling make your insulin spike? Especially if it makes your mouth water?

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #6

I would expect so, since apparently just thinking about eating can cause an insulin spike.

(Sophie) #7

Well, that’s just fucked up. It kinda defeats the purpose of fasting when I have to fix something for the hairy half to consume! :unamused:

Ya’ know I held strong over the holidays, but I lusted after the rolls.

Just a thought… I was getting ready to toss yet another lip balm because it’s flavored (sweet ) and it dawned on me that this crap is most likely spiking insulin too!!! I swear, you can’t get away from all the sugar laden garbage out there! It seems like it’s in everything! It’s sickening and it’s a sad state of affairs. I guess I’ll have to stick to my straight up cocoa butter for my beautification ministrations. :unamused:

And so here is a question. Doesn’t your body figure stuff out?

As a for instance, say you have a swipe of that sweet tasting lip balm every morning. And yes, it tastes sweet. But despite it tasting sweet, your body never does get it’s sugar. Does it eventually figure out that just because you taste that little bit of sweet on the lip balm, it’s not gonna ramp up the insulin for “candy that it’s never gonna get to sink it’s teeth into?” Or is it just plain stupid and will ramp up indefinitely for something it never gets?

It’s something I’ve wondered about when these kinds of discussions come up.

(Sophie) #14

How does that differ from smelling bacon that you cook for someone else or looking at food porn all day long while on a fast? If looking at food porn and smelling food cooking makes your insulin spike then wouldn’t it stand to reason that that swipe of sweet tasting lip balm can also cause a spike? I’m sure I’ve read on this forum that if it tastes sweet that it causes an insulin reaction. Besides, what can be in lip balm to make it taste so sweet? Is it only a negligible amount of sugar/sweetener? And what if it’s used multiple times a day? Just something to think about.

(Dan Dan) #15

Yes for some that is true but for many it’s not. It’s all in your head

When you become fat/keto adapted this will go away

(Sophie) #16

Hate to burst your bubble but I’ve been fat adapted for many months. I just don’t want my insulin spiked.

(Dan Dan) #17

As I said it’s all in your head so if you want it to be it will be.
It doesn’t burst my bubble because I’m not the one living in a bubble

(Sophie) #18

It’s not in my head, it’s logical. You said that when I become fat adapted it would all go away and I told you that I have been fat adapted for many months. I reiterate that I don’t want my insulin spiked by the sugar added to lip balm that I happen to use numerous times a day. Please quit twisting my words to suit your agenda.

(Dan Dan) #19

I have no agend but you obviously do

The trace amount of carbs/fat you would get from applying it is negligible. It’s the sweet taste, smell or thoughts that cause the spike and can and will go away when fat adapted. That said the mind is powerful and if you want it to be a problem it will be.
