Good morning everyone, As a newbie to Keto I have so many questions but find coming here is such a great help! So for today’s question: What is the number that will represent that I am in Ketosis? Today is day 5 of eating keto and have measured my blood ketone level twice. Yesterday I was .3 and today I’m .5. Lost 2.2 pounds since I weighed 3 days ago but realize it is just water weight at this time. I think I am on the right track and doing it correctly. I am sorry if this question has already been answered but still learning how to navigate this site.
Optimal ketone level
If you are registering ketones you are in ketosis. So you’re there already… well done!
As @MarkGossage has said you’re technically in ketosis as long as you’re making ketones. But one thing that is often not mentioned is that for many people minimal levels of ketosis do not result in weight change. I can have minimal ketones floating around while having a Mars bar every single day, but I won’t be losing weight at those levels.
My own ketones are currently ranging between 1 and 2.2 but I eat no carbs at all. Such high levels are also probably not necessary for you. I’m not targetting weight loss anymore but rather trying to repair auto immune issues, and for that higher levels are called for.
Phinney suggests levels above .5 as effective for weight loss and metabolic syndrome remission. That probably works well for a lot of people though some might need more and others less. It may even be something that changes over time within an individual.
Day five is very early. It’s a good sign that you are already seeing ketones. Are you eating less then 20 net grams of carbohydrates a day?
i’m a week in too. got readings around 0.2-0.3.
don’t even weigh myself, that will come automatically
Thank you for the information. Yes, I am under 20 net carbs. The range 7 to 17 a day. Total carbs 9-27. Very interesting journey, noticing huge difference in GI bloating. Amazing!
You’re smart not to weigh everyday, I have to resist the urge because the fluctuations can be discouraging to me. I am starting to notice improvements with bloating and indigestion! Big plus for me
