I have 3 breathalyzers and they each have a different response curve. Probably just by coincidence they all tend to meet when I’m fasting and deeper in ketosis around 0.11% BAC. The level I normally target typically gives me a 0.04% reading on one meter and 0.02 to 0.03% on another and just 0.01% on the last. However that last, lowest reading meter at low levels ramps up the fastest and is the first to max out.
These meters are too cheap and inconsistently calibrated to compare them to any fixed reference chart. But any meter by itself is still useful. I’ve found each responds consistently, though a couple of them are sensitive to breathing technique. I’ve compared mine to my blood glucose and blood ketone readings and tracked against a wide variety of eating patterns/fasting and now find I can usually guess what my breath meter will read ± 0.01% and after seeing the breath reading can usually guess my blood glucose and ketones within fairly tight ranges.
I guess that’s the bottom line! I still don’t know whether people are reading the number that’s listed as the % BAC or the o/oo number. I really still don’t know which one is “supposed to be 0.04 or higher to indicate ketosis. For me, blood ketones have generally been over 1.0 and the % reading is generally over 0.01. So those are the numbers I’m going to aim for!
My favorite is my cheapest, I bought it off ebay for ~$3 over a year ago but the listing is gone. This looks like the same unit but I have no idea if it is likely to perform the same.

I go with the % BAC number which ranges from 0.001 to 0.199 % BAC mainly because that value is displayed on the first screen of each of my meters and I have to cycle a couple of them to see results in other units. On my cheapest/favorite meter it only has 2 significant digits so the range is 0.01 to 0.19 % BAC.
They are designed to read Blood Alcohol Concentration for different Legal limits around the world. The Science I used in my posts are from several studies and correlates to several ‘Ketonix’ models which was the ‘Original Topic’. I used % Bac because it was the most common used and expanded on research others had already started. So use % Bac if you want the ‘Ketonix’ experience
Because they are ‘Cheap Breathalyzers’ they don’t always perform as to be expected but as most users have found they are excellent for quickly checking for the presence of ‘Ketones in the breath and tracking trends’
Your model was the first I know of that gave any reference to the different Legal limits. I researched how they make them and found they are commonly calibrated @ 0.01 = 26 ppm, 0.04 = 100 ppm or 0.08 = 208 ppm Blood Alcohol Concentration. Your model uses the 0.04 = 100 ppm.
So why the difference in ‘ppm’ because ‘ppm’ in the blood is different than ‘ppm’ in the breath. We need to keep in mind a device calibrated for legal limits of Blood Alcohol can at best have a correlation to ‘Ketones in the Breath’ we can’t expect perfection
They are excellent for quickly checking for the presence of ‘Ketones in the breath and tracking trends’
Thank you for your contribution it helped to clear up some things

Well, that makes sense! Of course the ppm in the blood is different. I just couldn’t correlate the two. Thanks for looking into this! Since anything over 0.01 seems to be my ketosis level, I’ll just aim for that.
That’s the range on mine too. I’ve never gotten over .02% even when my blood ketones are high.
That’s your meter. You’ve got one with low sensitivity. Get a different meter and you will get different numbers.
Sometimes there is residue on the sensor from manufacturing or constant use try 5 - 10 dry runs before you try again with breath to see if that helps
Well, guess what. Out of the clear blue two days ago my readings jumped up to 0.04 to 0.05 plus. Either my meter magically fixed itself or something I ate had lowered my ketones briefly. I don’t feel any different, but my blood ketones are creeping closer to 2 in the morning and my glucose fasting has started to drop into the 80s. Going to start the Zorn fast tomorrow— actually started tonight at 5pm, so looking forward to continued good numbers. My guess is that some restaurant meal along the way had more carbs than I thought.
