One month in, ketones declining

(Richard Ames) #1

Started my ketogenic diet exactly 30 days ago today. I am monitoring ketones with a blood meter. My overall average for period is 2.5 mmol/L, however I am noticing that the second half of the month is running about .7 lower than the first half of the month. I even had some 4s the first half, but none in the second half. I cannot think of any significant changes made the second half. Is my body just becoming more efficient at using ketones perhaps? Is it normal to start with a bang and then decline like this? Don’t get me wrong, I am very satisfied with a 2.5 average as I have read it’s slap dab in the middle of the “optimal” zone. It’s just that I want to more fully understand this process and what my body might or might not be doing.

By the way, so far I’m extremely please with what’s happening on this regimen. Weight loss is 14.4 lbs. (I started at 210 lbs., I’m 5’9"), and I have a lot more energy as the month has progressed. One thing I never expected to happen (and it was never the reason I wanted to try this), is the effect the ketogenic diet seems to be having on my mood. I just feel more positive about everything. It’s actually kind of odd, this change. I feel as if I’m approaching normal life challenges with a better attitude. It’s quite remarkable, and a very pleasant surprise.

Completely normal. Just shows your body is getting used to making the right amount of ketones rather than making too many, basically you’re getting fat adapted.

Thanks Shortstuff. I was also wondering what was up with that.

Its a sign you’re doing everything right. You are measuring what Ketones are left in the blood, its not a decline but an indicator that your body is using your Ketones up to repair damage, create new cells and all the good stuff, rather than making them from glucose. The brain loves ketones! Adaption seems to just arrive, you know it once your there sort of feeling. Mood is just one of the benefits, well done.
