On the fence

(Patrick) #1

Been watching a lot of drberg, still on the fence but i’ve been trying low or no carb meals off and on.I been thinking of trying it slowly if i’m going to get into this. IIs this a good way to start out? Meal 1 3 eggs, 3 bacon, 3 low carb pancakes, 3 low carb waffles with low carb syrup, a bulletproof coffee and 1 quart of salad? then meal 2 perhaps 1 quart of salad with 1 turkey burger or chicken breast or salmon and another bulletproof coffee? or is this too much? maybe meal 1 should be 3 eggs, 3 bacon, 3 pancakes and switch to 3 waffles the next day and keep rotating it?

I once went 3 days eating little to no cabs just fatty food and once i went back to a carb food i felt really bad.

Hi Patrick,

The body can either run primarily on sugar or primarily on fats, if it is burning sugar then fats are stored and locked away. If it is not burning sugar then fats are mobilized and utilized for energy. I think it rather difficult to try to go half way where you still eating quite a bit of carbs.

Personally, I would never eat a “low carb” version of anything such as pancakes, waffles or syrup nor would I choose “lean” meats such as a chicken breast or a turkey burger. I would eat a beef burger made with the highest fat meat available, or chicken thighs with the fat and skin left on. I don’t want “low fat”, I want full fat foods, animal fats, saturated fats. These are the foods that are going to fuel my body in ketosis.

You are doing exactly the right thing … you are asking questions and learning. This is the best way to start and there is a lot of knowledge on this forum. You might also try the 2 Keto Dudes podcasts.

I am not a big fan of Dr. Berg, he has a lot of commercial interests, but I love Drs. Eric Westman, Stephen Phinney, Jeff Volek and Jason Fung. There is just an amazing amount of information available. There is also dietdoctor.com which is a great place to start.

Keto for Life!

Best Regards,
Richard

Thanks for the reply, DrBerg i’ve noticed goes against what he said quite a bit but i’m just looking for information. As for sites I follow, I follow ruled.me. What do you think of my meal 1 and 2? I said low carb because i’m aiming for what I think i need at 20 carbs as a noob. I’m 33, male, 230 (fat) from west coast Canada so i figure the less carbs the better. I buy lean turkey thighs and chicken breasts from costco, just found quite a few keto friendly places like Walmart, Health Essentials, Thriftys. Is 20G carbs a day good for someone like me or should I aim for 30-50?

20g of carbs is perfect, but shoot for maybe 50g protein and then eat fat until you’re full.

(Patrick) #5

If I am full do i have to still reach my macros? (they are 169 fat, 138 protein, 20 carbs) or can i skip them for the day?

(VLC.MD) #6

Never eat when you are full.
Less is more.

(Mike W.) #7

That protein is astronomical. I personally do better on much less than “calculated”. I’m currently 255.

(Naomi Brewster) #8

fatty meats are best but if lean meat is your budget then make sure to add fat - olive/macadamia/avocado oil or butter. The lean meat will give you the protein but not the fat quotient desired (remember fat to satiety).

Thanks for the help guys. As for my protein number, it’s what I calculated on a website. I’m male, 33, 40% body fat judging by those pictures, I work in a produce department at a grocery store so i’m very active in moving and lifting and I bike to and from work all the time and it takes me 30 minutes both ways and i’m looking to lose weight and later get some muscle. Plan to do calisthenics when I slim down, also wanna get into boxing and martial arts. But most important of all…I wanna get my brain right. I’ve lost weight many times before but it’s always been short term and gain it all back for some reason, used to do P90X, Insanity, hiked up mountains, biked everywhere. Nothing every stuck for me for long…figure I should get my brain fixed and then worry about excercising. Never done high fats low carbs before, always did it by calories limit with whatever reasonable healthy things I could buy even with cheat meals.

If you weigh 230 lbs., then 60% of that means your lean body mass is 138 lbs. or 62.7 kilos. So try to keep your protein around 63 grams a day. Remember that even beef isn’t 100% protein, so if you eat, for example, a steak that is 25% protein by weight, that comes to 252 g or around 8.8 oz.of meat a day. Make up the rest of your calories with fat.

I never do macros. I think the protein and sometimes the carbs are too high when you do it based on caloric intake. The point here is not to look at calories but to first look at carbs, under 20 per day, then protein (1 gram per kilo of lean body mass) and then eat fat until you are 80% satisfied. Try to limit your food to 2 meals a day in an 8 hour window. Try to avoid or limit snacks. Lean meats are fine as long as you stick to your protein limits more or less and add fat. Avoid seed oils such as canola, soy and corn they are unstable. This is the whole diet and try not to overcomplicate it. If you want to eat keto pancakes or pizza I see nothing wrong with it. I personally do not use fake sugar other than swerve or drink anything other than water, seltzer, unsweetened tea or coffee with heavy whipping cream

That energy high you get on Keto, is it anything like feeling like you’re in godmode and you feel ALIVE and have CRAZY amounts of energy? August 2016 I lost 35 pounds hiking up a mountain 2 times a day 6 days a week and i had this CRAZY energy high that lasted for as long as i ate and excercised. Felt more amazing then anything i’ve experienced. Is this the same type of energy high? i’ve longed for that feeling ever since i had a small glimpse of it.

Get Dr Jason Fung’s book, “The Obesity Code”. He has done some heavy research into how and why we lose weight or don’t. I got it on my Kindle, and I’m about 1/4 through it. It’s full of info, and I promise you will find that what you thought you knew has been wrong for a very long time. As did I today.

Nice, i’m already down to 225. People at work keep getting annoyed at me because i’m on a keto diet and say the only way to get energy is on carbs. Told one guy you get fuel from carbs or fat from what i’ve read. Yesterday i ate 4 eggs, 4 bacon all cooked on a frying pan with 1 table spoon of ghee, 1 handful of shredded cheese on the eggs, then I added another table spoon and a spoon full of Chipotle Lime mayo from primal kitchen. Meal 2 a few cups of veggies i fried up with more ghee, a few spoonfuls of more mayo, 1 kirklan chicken breast from costco. So long water weight!

Today i’ll eat 3 eggs 3 bacon, ghee, that mayo again, 1 quart of spring mix with 2 table spoons primal kitchen honey mustard dressing and water of course (despite drberg saying drinking water is bad). Then meal 2 the same as i had last night for dinner plus another quart of spring mix with that salad dressing. Then when i get my pancake/waffle maker i’ll add in 3 pancakes with my 3 eggs and 3 bacon. I’m not trying to get all fully into this, i’m taking my time with this.

So i’ve lost a grand total of 11 pounds in my first week of doing keto, alot of water weight. I’m now down to 219, just felt like updating.

(Patrick) #17

So I hit the 2 month mark today (8 weeks) and hit a total of 34 pounds gone (230-196). Belly is still big looking when I take my shirt off but people tell me I look much slimmer and my 2XL shirts and hoodie are so baggy on my now, Plus I’m down to a 37 inch waist. Record my weight progress everyday on my app to see the progress over time down the road. Been fighting the scale off and on, but I feel much better. Still things I can improve on and get tired still even when I hit my macro goal and electrolytes goal but this will be the longest soon that I’ll have ever stuck with a diet.

Yay, you! Keep on ketoing on! This is just the beginning. :bacon::bacon:

Thanks, looking forward to the upcoming months and what i’ll look like by summer time. Sometimes I get urges to start running from nowhere and I never get urges to excercise, just hits me but i’ve not started that yet. Not yet got that powerful energy that can last days people talk about, but maybe because the only excercising I do is ride my bike to and from work. Most of my time doing keto i’ve suffered the flu (not keto flu, the other flu), still recovering from bronchitis and a snotty nose and it’s been nearly a month and a half. Also started taking up cold showers but stopped due to the stress it gives my body as i’m not 100% over it yet, can’t even go for a coffee with a girl i’m friends with yet lol.

I eat about 4 cups of spinach and 3 cups of broccoli now instead of a total of 14 cups of both combined. Still working on lowering my coffee intake from 4-5 a day to 1-2 a day and going lower, still working on my sleep. Take lots of salt and nu salt with my food.

(Patrick) #20

So an update I suppose. I lost 62 pounds so far (230-168), sadly I still got a big belly. I lost most of the weight in 5 months, kinda stalled and it’s been kinda meh for a little while now. I eat 2 times a day because If I eat 1 time I’ll feel bloated and like garbage. I keep to 25 net carbs or less, I still get tired though even though my electrolytes are 5-6000 sodium, 3000 potassium, 5-600 Mag. I’m sure it’s due to my sleeping, I can’t seem to fix it because I don’t WANT to sleep at 8 or 9PM and I like my many cups of coffee. Final update at the year mark.
