Off the T2D Meds

#1

I have been slowly delving into the Keto diet these last 2 months as a means to help with lowering my medication needs. I was diagnosed a few years after leaving the Army on Spring Break in 1993. Since then I have gone through the gamut of meds and am now on high doses. My meds were creeping up and after just starting to work at instead of plunging in to Keto fully, I was able to reduce my LT insulin use. My meds put me at a solid 6.9 HA1C or less. As I am working on the Keto changes, I am looking to adjust my meds while monitoring my glucose levels. I have the help of using a DexCom monitoring to help in alerting me as well. I have read that there are several people that have worked them selves off but no where have I seen insight as to the dropping of meds. I take Metformin 1000 ER x2 daily, 70 units tresiba, Actos 30mg and 1.5 Trulicity weekly. I have dropped 30 units of Tresiba and one of the 1000 Metformin. This leap is huge for me as it is complete change in mind set and one that was planted by my Endocrinologist’s and reading through the inter webs! I am looking forward to dropping the Actos and Trulicity this week as I continue to decrease the Tresiba and elimate the Metformin both. I have been monitoring blood sugars and with actively striving for an 18/6 fast/feed with the crutch of bullet coffee, my goal will be realized! I am not sure how others have “gone off their meds”. But mine is based off my monitoring with my DexCom and regular glucose meter checks, which are running around 95-120, through this paradigm shift to Keto! Any feed back from the folks that have and are on a similar journey, I would appreciate insight and pitfalls to avoid!

I was first diagnosed as a T2 in 2010. I got into a cycle of adding higher medication doses every time my blood sugars would start creeping up. By 2013, I was using nearly a vial of insulin per day. I started lazy Keto, which reduced my insulin usage to about 1/3rd a vial of insulin per day.

At the start of 2017, I changed to a restricted calorie version of Keto. I haven’t needed insulin since. I also stopped my metformin late in 2017.

Now, I’m not using any medications for diabetes, and my typical blood sugar reading is under 100. My A1C has dropped from 7.3 (on insulin) to 5.2 (without insulin).
