Odd Weight Gain

seed-oils

(Scott H.) #1

All, over the last three weeks, I have noticed a ten-pound weight gain.

My daily diet is:
-One meal a day
-Meat (beef steak, pork chops, roasted chicken), eggs, green onions, bacon, pork breakfast sausage (no additives or weird stuff), green vegetables, occasional–no more than 2oz at a time, once a week–roasted almonds
-In a week, maybe 1/2 cup of shredded cheese with dinner

I do Ted Naiman-style workouts most days.

I drink alcohol very sparingly, and in the last ten days, have had a drink twice.

I use no artificial sweeteners, but should probably by stock in La Croix while the market is down…

In the past two years, I went from 311 pounds to 199 pounds.

I have gotten more sleep in the last three weeks than normal, about eight hours per night. My stress level is way down.

Three weeks ago, I went to Aldi for the first time, here in Nebraska. They have Clancy’s pork rinds. I love Faraon pork rinds from California, but those are not available here. These are the closest. Our local Kroger ones are not much too my liking. The only change in my routine has been the addition of pork rinds. The ingredients say “Pork Skin, Salt”.

My question is, given that this is the only variable I can identify, does it seem reasonable that the pork rinds are the culprit? (I have stopped them as of two days ago, so I will soon find out…) Also, given that I eat a good amount of pork fat in sausage and bacon grease, any chance that these are cooked in seed oils that are having a bad effect?

What do you think?

Clancy’s are also 80 calories per 14 gr. If you’re eating the 92 gr package (3.25oz) that’s 525.7 calories per. Maybe you’re just eating more than you think or they’re having an unusual affect on you.

Or maybe you’re not telling us everything you eat?

Thanks. My diet is super simple, without cheating. I’m thinking it’s the odd effect or calorie increase.

The process of cooking pork skins creates lard. There’s no need for seed oil. I may be wrong and there’s some out there with seed oil but I haven’t ever seen it. However pork rinds could be an issue themselves if they’re something you eat a lot of. I basically limit them to occasional treats. Easy for me to over eat on them. :cowboy_hat_face:

Your muscle volume is probably the ‘weight gain’ it’s not adipose fat!

Ted Naiman-style workout?

Very true! Thanks for reminding us of potential body recomp.

@ScottNebraska You’d have to eat a helluva lot of pork rinds to gain 10 pounds of fat in 3 weeks. :muscle:

I love pork rinds more than anything, but dont have them much. Too many calories for their own good!

Most people WAY over eat pork rinds. Are you paying attention to how much you eat? A “normal” sized bag of pork rinds can be half a days worth of calories and fat for many.

Most likely the Salt leading to increased water retention. Doubtful you consumed an extra.30,000 calories the last three weeks, especially since your liver is depleted of glycogen.

Cut out the rinds and any supplemental salt for a few days and see what happens.

Thanks to you all.

I thought we don’t count calories. I think pork rinds are a lot of protein? I had the impression all the fat was cooked out of them and the crisp part is more protein than fat?

There’s no “we” when it comes to that one. Many don’t at first then the reality of math hits them at some point and they start paying attention. I lost a LOT of weight not counting, but the reality is that my large size equaled a hot burning metabolism. As I got smaller it got harder and harder to loose. Once I started tracking and re-figuring out my metabolism I started loosing again. Been that way ever since. I have a couple days of higher calories, i’ll maintain and if I keep it up I’ll start creeping up in weight again. It can be very hard to find your balance. Aside from lots of tweaking I had metabolic testing done.

Not much, usually in the area of ~10g/serving. Although few people eat only one serving! I’m one of those bottom of bag types myself, which i why I try to stay away from them. But when the Buffalo Chicken dip comes out… HELLO!

Initially, when your metabolism is deranged and you’re overweight and probably Hyperinsulemic, calories.don’t seem to matter. IMO this is also due to the fact you’re actively consuming Leptin.in fat and Leptin Resistance is rapidly dropping and.enabling Satiety.

Once you’re normalized, and this takes.time (for me it was over two years) your body tries to stop losing fat and achieve Homeostasis. Since your body operates on the principle that every meal may be your last one for a while, it’s an evolutionary survival reaction. That’s why you have to intentionally restrict calories to lose more fat. The method I use rather than counting calories is just to restrict food amounts to the point I make sure I’m actually hungry before each time I eat, usually OMAD.

I think it’s the salt. In some people, salt over a certain amount = crazy water retention.
