I just drop pre-prepared graphics on people who use that expression. My favorite is from Robb Wolf:
“1. You don’t cheat with food. 2. You eat food. 3. There are consequences to what you put down your pie hole. 4. That is all.”
I too abhor that word. I’d like to reach out and strangle those who use it. To me, it strongly suggests that the person has not embraced this way of eating as a lifestyle and tells me that there’s a chance they may still be “dieting” for a few months before they go back to “normal” eating. At best, I’m with Khan that words have denotative meaning, and “cheat” is not a positive word to me.
Sure, eat off-plan if you wish (people do; it’s okay to choose to do within parameters you define), but call it that. At least it indicates that they HAVE a plan the rest of the time—LOL.
