Not on Keto yet....But learning so much!

So I’ve been consuming a bunch of keto information the past week and a half, from youtube books, to recipe books to podcasts… and the one thing I noticed said repeatedly is that carbs help produce insulin and that in turn blocks lectin/grehlin, the hunger hormone. Yesterday I had about 1700 calories of food with me at school, all plant based carb heavy foods and I was so shocked to feel like I didn’t eat a single thing. After eating a bowl of about 500 calories of oatmeal (around 2-3 cups) I felt like I hadn’t eaten anything…

At this point, I became extremely excited to try keto and can’t wait to start on Saturday. Hearing someone say they ate two pats of butter and are full is mindboggling to be in my current plant-based carb state… I count this as a non-scale victory because it shows I’m listening and watching in my own experience to see if the keto diet has something to offer.

I don’t want to continue stuffing my stomach to capacity to feel full… I want to try the keto way and see what happens!

First time my wife and I tried Atkins (20 yrs ago), we went out for a diner breakfast. Got 2 eggs and either sausage or bacon - I forget. No toast, no home fries, no blueberry muffin.

We were panicked that it was going to leave us hungry. Come lunchtime - we were shocked that we were not able to have lunch - still stuffed from Breakfast!! Too bad we didn’t know enough to stay on it…

You will be shocked at how long you can last on fat.
Read up on Keto flu (carb withdrawal flu) to avoid it. Spoiler alert tons of salt and water to thirst is all you need. N=1, I never had Keto Flu

It took me about three weeks till satiety kicked in. (As you say, insulin blocks the leptin receptors in the brain, and we don’t register the leptin signal until the insulin level drops enough.) But it was weird when it happened. I had filled my plate with some salmon, and was intending to eat my usual quantity, but literally at the halfway point, I was done and had to put the plate away for later—much later, lol!

That was my first experience of satiety in decades, if ever. Now that sense of not wanting more food is so strong, I’ll actually feel a bit queasy at the thought of eating. There’s plenty of room in my stomach, however, and I still feel a bit strange when I reflect on how I used to fill up to nearly the bursting-point (and I mean that literally, no joke) on spaghetti, say, and still be hungry. These days I often am not hungry till mid-afternoon, which, if you knew me, you would know how unlike the old me that is!

You are fortunate to understand at young age, how ineffective carbs are at fulfilling hunger. I spent most of my life eating empty calories and not understanding how to properfly pacify the hormones involved.

I’m actually looking forward to when you start. The control you will discover is life changing and I soon hope to hear your reaction to it.

I always used to wonder how I could eat a quart or two of ice cream, or many slices of pizza, or half a pound of chocolate, or 12 cups of popcorn (without butter of course!) and still feel hungry 10 minutes later. Yes, some of it was emotional eating, but so much of it was hormonal responses that I didn’t understand and had no hope of overcoming by willpower alone. I’ve been keto for almost 3 years, and finally have the control i was missing for the first 5 decades of my life! Good luck on your new journey!
