Not Fat Adapted?

#1

Hi, all! Have a question about being fat-adapted or not. I have been keto for about 8 weeks now and in the last few days have started trying to work in some intermittent fasting. I’ve been okay for the most part, but I ate dinner at about 4:30 to 5 yesterday. Went to sleep about 10, got up at 5:45 and did yoga.

On my way to work I stopped at Starbucks to get a decaf Americano with heavy whipping cream and felt SO hungry when I was standing in line. Then before I got to work I started feeling quite nauseous. After getting to the office I made a couple sausage links and had a couple of ounces of cheddar cheese. Not feeling quite as hungry or nauseous now, but maybe a little bit still.

Does this mean I’m not fat-adapted? Should I keep up the IF or cycle back off for a time?

I’ve had about 25oz of water so far today, 2 pinches of pink Himalayan salt under my tongue, a teaspoon of 40,000 volts electroylte supplement, potassium supp, and my multi-vitamin.

I started keto on March 6th at 220.4 pounds. 210 as of this morning. Was hoping to have lost a bit more at this point too. :frowning:

Thanks for you help and guidance!

This following quote from the tuitnutrition might be helpful:

“Here’s how I gauge my fat-adaptation:
I can comfortably go several hours without eating and feel no hypoglycemic effects whatsoever
I have good, steady physical energy levels
My mind is sharp and my thinking clear
When I do finally start feeling some hunger pangs, I am just that—hungry, rather than hangry. I will seek a protein- and fat-rich meal, and have no desire to jump head-first into a half-gallon of ice cream or consume a cheese danish. (One of my former favorites, waaaay back in the pre-low-carb days.) I have no interest in sweets or starch. I genuinely want something high in fat and protein—something like a burger, a fatty pork chop, sausages, etc. But if I were to pee on a ketostick, there would be no indication of ketones.”

Hope this helps!

The feeling of satiety can be a bit like nausea; in other words, it’s almost a revulsion at the thought of food. I just don’t want any more, even though my belly is nowhere near stuffed, and the thought of eating leaves me feeling a bit unpleasant. I’ve heard it described disparagingly as a kind of anorexia, but it’s definitely a healthy lack of appetite, not a diseased one.

If your body is telling you that it doesn’t need food, listen to it. Don’t eat just for the sake of eating, wait until you’re actually hungry. If you’re fat-adapted, that may not be for quite a few hours after your previous meal, and you may actually find yourself fasting by accident. It’s been known to happen! :bacon:

It took me longer than 8 weeks to get into fat adaptation. I’d guess at least 3 months, if not more. And I wasn’t ‘cheating’. There has been a definite transition phase of being partially there as well. But I am there now. It’s like what others above have described.

Only recently have I been trying IF, and it’s been relatively easy. Sure, I’d prefer eating, but then I’ve been an eating machine my whole life. I really do like this not being hungry thing however. Such a concept. Who knew?
