I have the opposite of most people on this site. Is it possible my gallbladder is not dealing well with the fats?
Not constipated on Keto - quite the opposite!
Regina,
Don’t panic, I experienced the same thing on about the same time line as you. Your body is in the process of adapting and it has to change your gut biome to new enzymes that are better at digesting the new menu. Something has to go to make room for the new. Sounds like your going to be fat adapted pretty soon and once it changes over things will settle down. A couple weeks of discomfort , it dissipated and all the sudden I noticed I was adapted. This was just my experience but you never know, might fit your situation too!
and I just turned 60 years young too.
Thank God it stops at bedtime. Should I take probiotics or anything. It’s mainly in the morning. Today was the first day I felt no real hunger, Had two good meals. But didn’t eat until one and it was hellish until then. Better at night.
Probiotics…meh? I tried them and also took ox bile salts as well but to be honest, I cannot say they did anything other than upset my tummy right after taking them. I also gained weight the couple weeks I took them, which after researching discovered that is quite normal. If your tummy is upset right after a meal you could take an enzyme pill with your meal that will help digest that meal and might aid in the biome rebuild.
What worked best to settle things down for me was a warm cup of water with a little squirt of lemon juice and a touch of salt. Might give it a shot!
Do you use MCT oil?
I had the runs 30 minutes after having my very first BPC, which was also my very first Keto food/drink starting the diet on day 1.
I though, damn that Keto flu kicks in fast.
Turns out it was the MCT oil. You really gotta build up a tolerance to that stuff.
I don’t use MCT oil, and I’m terrified of magnesium for the reason stated above.
Magnesium is an essential electrolyte. If your body doesn’t have enough it steals potassium. There are different forms of magnesium. Magnesium citrate is the one people tend to have issues with if there are issues to be had. I spread my 4 100mg pills out through the day and do fine. There are other forms of magnesium like magnesium glycinate.
Also make sure you are getting enough sodium.
Thank you for the info. As far as salt, I put it on everything and eat it as a snack!
I just looked at the bottle I have. Magnesium malate. Three capsules is what is recommended and each one has 425 mg. And three capsules are 3 grams of carbs??? How much should I start out with. I know most people are deficient in magnesium. But these are the size of horse pills!! What kind do you use?
The link below has good info on magnesium types. I take magnesium citrate and each pill is 100mg. I take 4 a day.
Thanks so much. I shopping around for magnesium, and they all seem to have a lot of carbs.
Just removing carbs does that to me.
And I do mean just removing carbs - if I eat the exact same stuff but add carbs, it stops. I’ve played around with various combos, and no real difference. It doesn’t matter which carbs.
Adding a bunch of psylium husk doesn’t stop it, exactly, but does make it less…unpleasant.
That’s probably why you’re not constipated. Low sodium is one of the reasons people get constipated on keto. As for the opposite problem, all that fat can go right through you at first, but once you’re fat-adapted, everything should settle down. You may notice that your bowel movements are less frequent, and that the stools are smaller, too.
When I was a carb-burner, I could switch from fine to constipation or to diarrhea in an instant; I never knew. After a year on keto, I find everything to be very calm and consistent.
Well I’m looking forward to that moment. Today was slightly better. Got away with seven better hours than yesterday. And my appetite is definitely decreasing. I am assuming that two meals a day should calm things down. Have had all the relevant tests and doctor says no reason to worry.
I occasionally have the same problem. Haven’t been able to nail it down quite yet, but I started to keep a very detailed food/mood/energy level/symptom diary.
Never take mag citrate unless you want horrible abdominal cramps. I give it to patients in the ER who come in with constipation, it’s nickname sparkling thunder should say all you need to know.
I am scared to death of magnesium given my body’s predilection. 60 years old and the only time I have been constipated is when I travel. Which isn’t that much. Cheap hotel, nice hotel. Don’t go for two days. That’s obviously a mental thing.
Keep some Imodium on hand for that piece of mind if you feel it’s psychological.
