I’ve been doing Keto since January 8. It is now February 20 and I still don’t think I’ve gotten into ketosis. I have the test strips and have shown some small amounts of ketones, but I haven’t lost that much weight and haven’t gotten the energy surge or clarity that others boast about. I have broken the diet a couple times, but then got right back on it. I don’t always count my macros, but some days I do. Often I am really good during the day, but when I get home or around dinner time I make several Keto treats, or stop counting macros, etc. I’m starting to get discouraged and feel like quitting. Today I felt like I could NOT stop eating, my appetite was huge! I’m also using the Perfect Keto exogenous ketones, to no avail. My wedding dress fitting is in April, so I am really wanting to slim down more, but I’m just not seeing progress. Help! *note, I eat a vegetarian diet and eat vegan twice a week for religious purposes
No weight loss, no energy surge
Exogenous ketone supplementation will not trigger weight loss, because ketones are a sign, not an objective. Ketones don’t cause weight loss, they’re a byproduct of it (lipolysis).
There are a lot of factors (dietary, hormonal, lifestyle) that can contribute to preventing ketosis. But the surest and fastest way to lose weight is fasting. You may want to try an intermittent fasting regime. Or fast for 1-2 days to jump start ketosis and then resume eating.
Hi Elena!
I feel you, the start is hard, especially when you haven’t ever been in ketosis (knowingly). The keto diet is one of those diets where you need to be actually very consistent and there is not much wiggle room. It’s not like diets, where you can eat carbs and day later everything is back in order. Meaning if you fell off the wagon then you will start the next day again and there’s no impact. Although if something happens then this is the process to go, just start over.
I would like to answer the question if you are in ketosis or not because this will impact the fat loss part also. Have you had any keto flu symptoms? Keto breath/dragon breath (similar to acetone), nausea, tiredness, and dizziness?
If not, then I am guessing you haven’t been in ketosis because maybe you have eaten hidden carbs? (From foods, not knowingly) I would suggest you to go over all the foods you are eating with a very sharp eye for carbs and try to understand where they come from (if any).
Exogenous ketones can help you get into ketosis, but if your diet game is not on point, then it doesn’t help.
Hope this helps
I like DR. Berg he explains it in a simple way (for a simple person like me)

Oh no poor you. I started the same day and have had the opposite experience, it’s worked super well and I’m not hungry. When you’re hungry on your non-vegan days fill up on cheese. Nuts and olives have also helped me out and I haven’t bothered with counting macros too much other than to limit carbs to nil apart from what’s in veggies and nuts. Keep at it, they say it can take longer for women to men. Do you listen to the podcast? I found it really useful not just from an information point of view but I listened to couple a day (I’ve caught up now!) which kept me on the right path. Good luck!
I have been doing the 16-8 fast since last November. I saw a little water weight loss at the beginning, but not since then. Have you heard of the egg fast?
Egg fast, fat fast, juice fast, protein sparring fast, cleansing fast… I haven’t felt the need to try any of them. They are more complicated (require thinking about food) and if the insulin theory is true, these fasts will be less effective than water fasting.
If 16/8 isn’t working well enough for you, and you don’t like multi day fasting, consider alternate day fasting. When combined with 16/8 it results in 40 hour fasts. This allows more time for insulin levels to fall and physiological healing to occur.
How many carbs are you eating a day? It must be hard to stay under 20 grams per day on vegetarian and vegan.
Ha ha sorry, THE podcast! (It was @carl and @richard who set up this site following the success of the 2 Keto Dudes Podcast)
