No need to calculate net carbs in UK?

#1

So I thought I was moving out of the newbie stage but evidently not. Still lots to learn. Please may someone explain this to me? I was happily calculating net carbs here in Nottingham, England. I watch a lot of American YouTube sites so this may have passed me by.

It hasn’t stopped me from losing 22lb though so I’m not too concerned.

PS. I’m not on Atkins but Google led me to their site.

It’s as it says - in the uk (and Europe) the fibre has already been subtracted out so the Carbohydrate number is already net carbs. Total carbs would be Carbohydrates + fibre.

Ignore the ‘of which sugars’ line - this simply tells you how much of the carbohydrates are simple sugars like glucose or fructose. The rest of the carbs will be complex carbohydrates like starches. But eventually your body will break them all down to simple sugars anyway.

Thank you, Duncan. That makes life easier! Lucy

I believe this is also true in most Commonwealth countries, as well. It would be worth checking with whatever government agency regulates nutritional information in your country to determine how the carbohydrate numbers are given. I imagine there’s a Web site in each country that explains this.

Thanks for posting this @Lucinda
I too have been learning mostly from US sites and videos, and therefore have been incorrectly subtracting fibre twice on the UK foods.

Forehead slap - I’ve been doing this all wrong since I started. Gah.

Thanks a million for sharing. Here’s to us KCKO with the right calculations from now on

Just imagine what we can achieve when we do it right! :joy: I admit, I haven’t tracked things often of late: I just eat low carb/ high fat foods and I get slow but steady losses. I am planning on getting more serious when I am back on track and life is less hectic. Glad I found out at last and glad it helped you.

I live in the US but am British and on my recent trip home (first post-Keto) I noticed that obviously carby things had a zero or negative carb score if you took off the fiber (fibre  which told me something was wrong.
It can be an issue when using US based logging apps so when I log US foods I subtract but UK foods, I don’t. It is a little tricky when you mix them.
Luckily on LoseIt if you are in the UK It defaults to UK foods and in the US vice versa.

Cheers @Capnbob, I’ve been doing exactly that (getting the zero or negative fibre scores) and blissfully eating aaaaaall sorts of high carb items in error. Nuts and nut butters galore!
Entering items on FatSecret often didn’t match up to the net carbs I was calculating from the packets and I was optimistically thinking ‘Ah well, the brand must have recently reduced their carbs’ or something  I seem to have accidentally joined a US FatSecret…which is different than a UK version…I think?

I’ll look up LoseIt now that you’ve recommended it. I just got a fitbit and was thinking of logging on that instead.

Either way, I have a few things to figure out before I’m on the straight and narrow purest path to Keto again! And thank goodness for @Lucinda

Hope you enjoyed the trip back to the homeland. Just out of curiosity - what differences did you find in keto eating between the US and UK?

I wonder how long it will be before the carb cartel, carbcabal, or the carbohydrate consortium, push political leaders to pass a law that says carbs need not be included on the labeling of certain foods. Because, well, as everyone knows, carbs are healthy. Why bother putting them on the label. It’s. It like they are going to hurt anyone like fat does. :face_with_monocle:

I’m personally worried about the shadowy Sugar Syndicate…

Just look at their logo. The SSS is a force to be reckoned with.

Oh my goodness I just came across this today! I’m in the UK and have been doing Keto/low carb since June so about 4 months - I have lost (20 pounds in weight) but gone down 2 dress sizes etc. I have been working out net carbs as well by deducting fibre :see_no_evil: I am literally in shock, I guess weightless can only increase now I know the truth!
