No more Sweetners? Boooooooo

Ok, so I happened across this Ketovangelist episode and it was very interesting and made me sad as well…as I have realized, I may be having some side effects from eating stevia/“fake” sweetner lately (stats: Keto since 5/24/17, down 25lbs). Been starting to feel fatigue, and occasional headaches.

It makes sense, but now I have to face the fact that I may have to eliminate any type of sweetener that I once thought may have been “Ok for Keto”.

Anyone’s thoughts? If you have since gone off any and all things sweet, how did you do it? tips?

Ugh. Bad news if you have a sweet tooth right? You may find that you are OK with another type of sweetener. My advice would be to come off them all for a few weeks and then test your reaction to a few different ones (one at a time obviously!) and see if you can find one that works. Or you could give up all sweet stuff for good of course. Kill me now!

LOL yes “kill me now” is right. But you know what? I think it can be done. I had a severe sweet tooth before Keto. LOOOOOVED anything and all things PB/Chocolate, ice cream, cakes, you name it. Somehow I was able to cut those things out with no problem. So it might work!!! Wish me luck!

Good luck. Going cold turkey for a while will certainly do you no harm and you might find you can actually cope fine without.

I find I am fine with aspartame for which I am very happy since I do like to indulge in Diet Coke every once in a while. Acesulfame potassium gives me an instant headache. I don’t know about stevia. I am not a big fan of its aftertaste. Ironic considering how much I like Diet Coke.

Did you know that in Europe Diet Coke has both aspartame and aceK? How cheeky is that?

It might just be one kind. My sister in law is super sensitive to sucralose and basically got poisoning from it once. She can eat stevia and aspartame.

I decided to give up all sweeteners a few months ago. It was easier after I quit coffee to lower my blood pressure. I had pretty much given up on sugar free sweets otherwise. I don’t have any more sweet cravings and doughnuts no longer look like food. It just takes time for your system to quit craving it.

That the best bit for me. Tim Hortons (a coffee and doughnut place) is practically a religious institution around here and it’s very common for someone to bring a couple dozen doughnuts to meeting and to slap the box down in the middle of the table. To look at the box and not get any stirring in the gut is liberating.

Can one of you guys please just invent a way to test insulin at home? Thanks in advance.

arrrrgh. I also have high BP (since a few years ago), but I’ve been drinking coffee daily from the womb LOL only a cup a day though. AND I’ve gone from 4 BP pills a day to just 2…hoping within time to be off completely, just hope I don’t have to give up my cup o’ joe!

I am not of the opinion that people, even with high blood pressure, should come off of coffee. I think if you have high BP you might try a day or two to test. For me the change in my numbers was dramatic and it only took one day to come down. Ten points off of both numbers the first day, five the second, and very consistent ever since. I had a cup this morning because the earthquakes kept waking me up last night and it is back up the fifteen points on both numbers. So I think I must be extra sensitive to caffeine somehow.

Meh. A lot of opinions with keto evangelist, and they have a right to them.

I use sweeteners whenever I want, makes my keto life much more free and unrestricted, and I’m all about freedom.

I put a few drops of stevia in my lattes and once or twice a month have a Dr. Diet Pepper. Neither affect my ketones or blood sugar (no idea on insulin since we can’t measure it at home, as far as I know, but I am not overweight). I’ve had xylitol a few times, too, since I went keto, and it didn’t bother me. Guess you just have to test and see how things affect you.

I do think if you’re making desserts and baking and things like that, you end up using a lot of this stuff, and that might get you in trouble. Not related to insulin/BS, I had a few pieces of sugar-free fudge years and years ago (sweetened with malitol), and I had the most miserable bloated gut-pain night of my life. I can only guess how much malitol they put in it to make it taste like normal fudge. :open_mouth:

My husband can handle aspartame just fine, it gives me a headache. I can handle erythritol and monk fruit or xylitol in small amounts. Overall we have cut out a lot of sweet from our lives and usually when a craving for something sweet hits we do berries and cream! Find what works for you and don’t overdo it.

I am finding the same issues and when I have been super strict and I do not use stevia or eat anything sweet-even if it is “keto safe”-my numbers are in a good range. When I started to incorporate the stevia back in-i can CLEARLY see my numbers going haywire.
