Hey everyone, in trying to keep the carbs down, I’m thinking you really need to limit your veggies. If I limit my veggies, I’m thinking you are limiting your nutrition. I really wanted to up my nutrition this time around doing keto, I just don’t like eating mainly meat and dairy. If it’s what I have to do to lose this 20 lbs I’ll do it but maybe a good multivitamin is in order to cover the bases. … I’m 3 weeks in now heading towards the “month” hopefully of fat adaptation and still have not lost the water weight. I thought that happened in the beginning? It did the last time I did keto. I usually eat some eggs/bacon for breakfast or a smoothie, because of decreased hunger I’ll have a slice of cheese with mayo and a piece of ham or turkey on it with a dill pickle folded up for lunch and if I’m hungry I’ll have a protein shake smoothie with low carb protein powder, 1/4c blueberries, some coconut oil or some peanut butter, coconut milk. Any thoughts?
No/less veggies?
I don’t stick to the 20g of carbs thing anymore but never really cared about carbs from veggies assuming they were low glycemic ones that I could eat anyways. There was never a difference in fat loss for me either way.
Well that’s good, I have no fat loss yet so I’m just pondering why. This was easy last time, ate the same way, maybe not so strict. I have enjoyed an “enlightened” popsicle occasionally and a white claw seltzer beverage with zero carbs. I’m sticking to it tho. Waiting on the healing and fat loss.
I’d ditch all the fake stuff… smoothies, shakes, low carb powder, coconut oil, peanut butter, coconut milk and eat proper meals once or twice a day within a 6 hour window. Sure as hell worked for me. Also of all the berries blueberries have the highest carb value.
Forget to say about this, depending on what flavor protein you’re using I do a “sludge”. 1-2 scoops protein, typically frozen blueberries (I usually do 50g per scoop of protein) mix it up and it’s AWESOME! My two favorites are chocolate with some peanut butter and some whipped cream on top, another one I do a lot it oatmeal cookie with blueberries and sometimes peanut butter as well and on my lifting days I’ll also put some actual oatmeal in it, but most here wouldn’t. All really depends on your flavor of protein but tastes like a desert and awesome way to get it in vs drinking it.
I don’t see any fake stuff in there. Smoothies are made with fresh ingredients, protein powder is just whey with little to no sugar added and what’s wing with coconut oil and I know peanut butter is a legume so I use limited amount, and coconut milk? Nothing fake here…I don’t get it. Now the popsicles 1 occasionally and the seltzer water cocktail I agree are fake but you didn’t even mention them. And I do eat “proper meals” everyday, don’t respond if you don’t know what you are talking about.
I had veggies at every evening meal for a good year and a half of keto. Not a lot and no heavy carb veggies. I started getting curious about carnivore and and dove in early March. I found out I liked it and lost a bit more weight. As of this morning I have only three pounds to lose so I am not stressing over it. It sounds strange when you have been taught your whole life veggies = nutrition but I have found that veggies and fiber are optional. I plan on eating this way for the rest of my years.
Hmmmm interesting. I’d lose it if I had to eat all meat all the time, but that’s just me.
Many here are afraid of protein in general, think Whey is like apple pie and against any and all sweeteners. Expect that a lot.
Good to know! More keto police, was hoping this place was void of them but they are everywhere I guess.
Do you eat enough? Hunger or not, you need your nutrients and the lunch sounds tiny even without exact amounts. You probably don’t eat a big enough breakfast to get away with 1-2 tiny meals afterwards. A piece of meat surely doesn’t give you enough nutrients, a significant amount may be different. I am not against vegetables at all, I did mostly vegetarian keto/low-carb until recently and just because I avoid vegetables now as I should, they may be perfect for others.
And I would be the last to have problems with the fruits, I eat any kind if I fancy it, the carb intake is the important thing, not the carb content in 100g, I don’t care about that, it makes little sense to me unless I want to eat big amounts, of course. It’s the same with vegetables. I couldn’t afford eating fried cauliflower even when my carb limit was 40g, way too much carbs but I can eat onion or garlic any time as it’s very few carbs - due to the amounts. But I don’t eat plants for nutrients, I eat them for joy or not at all.
I eat normal food, why the protein powder? Do you not like eggs or meat or some other option in big enough amounts? It’s your decision, of course, a good protein powder is okay but still some processed thing and makes little sense to most of us on keto, protein adds up quickly even if we use fatty sources as there is no significant amount of carbs to take… But maybe not everyone is like this or you love protein powder or (I can relate) you find drinking your protein easier when you have not much hunger…
I don’t advise my style but I tried out carnivore with very little meat (I simply couldn’t get more). And it was one of my best ideas ever. I focus on eggs, have dairy, real carnivores often have them too, it’s probably very nice for variety. it’s not only meat but one may get used to it. I never was able to eat meat more than once a month without getting bored of it, it quickly changed, a day without meat is strange… There are so many different kinds of meat, so much variety…
Of course, carnivore isn’t for everyone, not even very temporarily… But I got great benefits just having a few carni day here and there just because I pretty much forgot about vegetables and nuts so my carbs went way lower, I lost my peanut addiction too, almost completely stopped eating sweets… Many people get similar benefits on keto I imagine. I am sure we usually need the right style and not everyone starts with that right away. I am a very good example as I ate nothing like now but I needed time to arrive here. I like experimenting, it’s useful if the first version doesn’t work well enough. Sometimes we need to stop eating something we thought it will be with us forever…
But it’s quite possible your personal style will be just fine for you Make it enjoyable if you can, I basically ignore all advice if it’s not for me and I never regret it. We are so different, physically, mentally, we can’t use other people’s rules. But they may give us good ideas.
I thought I did. The thing is I don’t like to cook. I just like to do easy things like rolling up some meat cheese, smoothies/protein shakes whatever you call them. I do have a piece of meat and some kind of veg for dinner most times. After coffee in the morning I just want something easy that doesn’t involve doing a bunch of dishes and clean up. I do eat broccoli and cauliflower alot maybe they are too high in carbs for me like you. I had some salt under my tongue this morning to up my salt and it came right back up after. Ugh it was awful. I’ll be experimenting to see what happens. Thank you
For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things, to Him be the glory forever. Amen Rom 11:36
Have you tried adding a little salt to your water? Just a little, several times a day…
Just tastes a little salty.
I often make a big glass of water with a little lemon juice and a dash of salt. I find it refreshing.
I also use some electrolyte powder, which tastes kind of crummy by itself, but the lemon and salt makes it better.
Another version is to mix things up in plain water, then add some sparkling ( carbonated ) water…
I take a grind of redman’s salt into my palm daily and pop it in my mouth at 9:30. It’s my morning snack.
I don’t even know if I need more salt, I just haven’t been feeling all that great. I haven’t lost the water weight, still feel the same. Never had keto flu, maybe I’ll go get some electrolytes today. I had some when I was an avid cyclist that were really good, probably more sugar than I can have now.
It’s individual. I would like to see the force that could make me drinking salty water, that’s super gross to me! I would eat salt instead if I needed it or a ton of lightly salted soup… Or some saltier stuff I like the taste of. There are possibilities. Thankfully, the normally salted food is enough for me and for many others (it’s trickier with a higher sodium need or less food). Dizzyness would show I need more, there are other signs for others I heard of…
But lots of people drink salty water without problems, maybe try it out if you think you need more sodium.
If you ask people for their thoughts then I suggest you are prepared to receive them.
Good luck on your journey.
