No Dairy or Pork?

Hi y’all,

I hope all is well. Just wondering if anyone has tried doing KETO without consuming dairy or pork? The high consumption of bacon and dairy turned me off of KETO after 6 months of it, even though I had dropped 30 pounds.

If you have or are doing KETO without pork or dairy. What are the main staples in your diet?

A lot of folks do keto without dairy, and though bacon is a favorite for many keto folks it’s definitely not a requirement!

I do eat bacon but not all the time. My protein and fat staples are ground beef (as high-fat as I can find); canned sardines and salmon in salads; eggs; lamb; various forms of coconut; avocados; mayonnaise; liver (I’m working on doing more organ meats but liver is it right now).
I eat lots of butter - not sure if that counts as dairy for you (if you want to eat it but the milk proteins bother you, it’s pretty easy to clarify it so that it’s only fat).

I have been able to find beef bacon, however it does get pretty pricey. Eggs, fish, and avocados will be a big part of my diet in the future. I have found ghee in a few stores, but my goodness it’s expensive.

As others have mentioned, there are lots of protein sources that are not pork. Personally, I don’t eat pork… or shrimp or catfish or rabbit or any of the meats that would be Biblically “unclean” (no offense intended, just not sure how else to describe). That leaves many kinds of fish, poultry, beef and numerous others. There are options. For me, that also allows eggs, which are considered to be a very high quality food among many.

As for dairy, I do use some but maybe not as much as most. It tends to be a condiment or ingredient here more than a stand-alone food group. I like cheese but don’t usually just sit down and eat cheese. More likely, it’s in something or on something to alter the texture or flavor. I don’t drink milk at all. Heavy whipping cream is used in my morning coffee and occasionally for part of a soup base or baking ingredient. Butter is also a condiment, not a food group but I don’t avoid it.

If you don’t want to use dairy, you might find coconut oil to be to your liking in place of butter in many situations, cooking and ingredients. You might find nutritional yeast flakes an interesting addition to some things to add a bit of flavor. Some will use variations of nut butters in different ways to try to enhance the flavors or textures of some things.

There are a lot of foods that are keto friendly even when avoiding pork and dairy. You just have to figure out what works for you, bot in flavor and in nutrition.

Good luck!

I really enjoyed your post, thank you. One of the only instances I believe I will miss heavy whipping cream is in my morning coffee. Pork and milk will be pretty easy to abstain from.

Not sure what I’d do without the heavy whipping cream for the coffee. It’s a poor substitute for Bailey’s creamers anyway, but it seems to get the job done. I’ve been through a lot of different creamers hoping for just the right one that will make my taste buds sing. So far, it’s wishful thinking, and I’ve tasted just about everything I could find, soy, almond, coconut, they just don’t do it for me. So far, the HWC plus a few drops of Vanilla Cream SweetLeaf Sweet Drops is about as good as it gets for me.

Fun, fun.

You may not have heard of this in Texas, but there’s this thing called BEEF. :cow2::meat_on_bone::cut_of_meat:

I highly recommend it :grinning:

Haha I know a thing or two about beef, but I was looking for some people who have cut out pork.

Yes, store-bought ghee is expensive, but making your own clarified butter is easy and the result is pretty close in cost to butter (you lose some of it in the process, so I suppose it’s a bit pricier but not much…).

We haven’t cut out pork completely but besides bacon, we are not big pork eaters at our house. Our meat go-tos are beef (any cut), chicken thighs, salmon, some tuna though not too often due to the mercury. There are many types of sausages not made with pork, and any lowfat meat including fish can be made more fatty if you put a nice fat filled sauce on it.

I also don’t eat dairy due to an allergy so I use Avocado oil, coconut oil, olive oil, and bacon fat. I know that’s pork but it does add a nice flavor to things. Beef tallow is another fat people use but I haven’t tried that, yet. I need to find a place to buy some.

In my tea I use coconut cream to make it more Latte like.

I rarely eat dairy or pork. They both cause issues of differing kinds for me. When I do eat them it’s because of some special occasion and I’ve decided eating them will be worth the fallout later. (Dairy=constipation, zits; pork=lethargy) I eat lots and lots of fatty beef, duck, and salmon. A few times a week I’ll have some eggs or sardines or clams or homemade liverwurst, and once in a while I’ll have chicken.
