Hello all. Yesterday was week 3 on keto. My Blood Ketones have been stable between 2.5 and 3.5 for the past 10 days or so. I was wondering if anyone had any good links For research done on the effects of nicotine on the metabolism specifically, nicotine patches, lozenges and gum causing glycogenesis in the liver and how this may affect Ketosis. Thanks! #KCAKO!
Nicotine on Keto
I don’t have any research articles but it seems that I have read nicotine causes higher insulin levels.
I recently quit nicotine gum after reading some material online that it can promote insulin resistance. Here is link to one of them from PubMed. I’m hoping I’ll have better fat loss results …
Disclosure: nicotine is my vice.
If you’re getting just nicotine, I don’t know that dropping it improve much. According to Taubes, it’s impact in lipoprotein lipase helps muscle burn fat and adipose tissues take up less. Not sure of the intensity of the effect, or if there’s a difference from getting it through (preferably not smoking) different delivery methods, but this could be the basis for the observation that smokers gain weight after quitting.
So the question is, what tissue would you rather be insulin resistant, relatively speaking? I don’t mind adipose tissue being more IR than muscle, personally.
I know that the nicotine they put in cigarettes raise the insulin in our bodies. If we aren’t taking in sugar, wouldn’t this be a negative affect to what we are aiming for?
