Newish to Keto

(Brandon) #1

Hi all. Kind of new to keto…did it once before but it was very sloppy/dirty keto. My goal is to get down to 180 by Aug. 1st. I am at 214 right now and stalled on a lazy keto program. Also I had a total thyroidectomy 8 years ago and take levothyroxine.

The 180lb goal is try and get back into active duty service and finish out my retirement. I was forced out at just under 9 years

Welcome back!! How can we help?

Hi Brandon.

Consider using a carb tracker like cronometer.com to ensure you are keeping your carbs low enough to encourage body fat being used as fuel.

Also consider lowering the amount of dairy and nuts you are eating. I was able to drop an extra 300 calories worth of fat without it affecting my hunger by doing this.

If you are using artificial sweetners, think about reducing usage or even not using them at all. These can spike insulin levels and keeping our insulin levels as low as possible keeps us in a better state to burn body fat.

Try not to snack and consider reducing your eating window (from noon to dinner time for example). If you can do this without overbearing hunger, it’s a big chunk of the day where you insulin stays low.

I dont do alot of dairy and almost no sweetners. I drink coffee black minus my morning keto coffee. I work nights and am up at 12 and do not eat till 9pm. I am off work at 330 and i may, but usually do not eat when i get home. Other than a small packet of unsweetened almond butter i really do not eat nuts. And my calories are about half what i would need to be maintenance. Its weird. This stall is bothering me enough since i am on a time crunch to try and lose the weight. I turn 35 aug 5th and i think that is the age cut off for navy reserves

I’m new to keto so don’t really know much about stalls etc but I have read on here, a couple of time, that sometimes having a high carb day can kick start weight lose.
If trying @CarlKeller s suggestions doesn’t help (I hope they do) it might be worth a shot.

It might help if you describe what you are eating and when. Hidden carbs are often a big problem for many people.

Just based on what you have already said I’d recommend stopping with the keto coffee. It’s a good crutch for starting on a keto diet but it’s just giving you an extra insulin push in the middle of your feeding restriction period. That can cause stalls and is an easy fix.

Also, that almond butter packet, is that part of a snack or a proper meal? If it’s a snack, it a good idea to drop it. You should only be eating at full meals for the fewest number of insulin spikes.

Usually the almond packet is on my break, about 45 minutes before my lunch. I use it as a kind of tide me over. Lunch is usually a spinach salad and either some kind of meat that i cooked the night before or eggs (4) pan fried in butter. With some kind of crunchy snack like parmesan crisps or pork rinds and either an avocado or some guacamole. Salad dressing is usually just oil vinegar and salt and pepper

Hey there @Starboard, my biggest concern is the thyroidectomy, I recently found endocrinologist, Dr. Ridha Arem of Houston, and am reading his book “The Thyroid Solution” to better understand thyroid issues. I hope that helps!

(Brandon) #9

Unfortunately i no longer have a thyroid so i am dependent upon medication for the rest of my life. My thyroid nearly killed me more than once and i had dealt with hormone induced temporary paralysis as well as a few heart attacks(not severe) before being admitted to the hospital for several weeks of micro dosing my thyroid medicine before the doctors felt it safe enough to operate. My simple surgery also lasted nearly 10 hours.

Anyways i have an appointment with a new endo next month that may hopefully help me a bit

@Starboard, I’m so sorry to hear all of this; and thank goodness you’re still around! There’s nothing simple about a thyroidectomy  you’re lucky you have a voice… so dangerous! I’d definitely check out Dr. Arem, he sees bad advice from other endocrinologists every day. Has developed his own line of supplements specifically designed for folks w/ thyroid issues; has developed his own protocol… as far as I can tell so far pretty much recommends keto, or darned near keto. I wish I had known about him when I lived in Houston, I would have booked an appt, esp since he’s about a 20 min drive from where I lived. LOL oh well! Best of luck to you my friend!
