Newbie with stomach bug

(Keri ßell) #1

Hi all! So I began my Keto journey on the 18th of thi month, 2 weeks ago tomorrow. I have been successful so far; about 7 lbs down. Until Monday- then IT hit. The Norovirus. I was fortunate that it only lasted about a day. My issue is- I can’t get my stomach to quit hurting. I am trying to stick with Keto but almost nothing is appealing. I ate a Ritz cracker and drank a bit of Sprite and that settled it somewhat, but I want to try to keep on track as much as possible. Any advice on overcoming this? I haven’t completely adjusted to ketosis so I was already a bit nauseated most of the time before I got the bug. So any help is greatly appreciated!

If you were further along I’d say try to fast, but you’re early enoug, that might be tough. This will probably sound like heresy on the forum, but I’d say eat what settles your stomach, get better, then restart.

Don’t go crazy on sugar, but just take the time to continue to read and learn, and then jump back on the horse.

I 2nd the above. Don’t worry about losing progress, the 7lbs is typically water weight that you will probably gain back if you abandon ship completely, but once you are feeling healthy you will be able to lose it again. The initial weight loss is pretty misleading for many. You also hear people who think they have plateaued after that initial weight loss when it slows, and they may not even be fat adapted yet. I’d agree, just eat whatever makes you feel better. The transition can be difficult enough even when you aren’t sick, so don’t force it.

Thanks you guys. I was thinking that might be what I needed to do but didn’t want to abandon ship (even for a couple days) and have to restart. But feeling this bad just isn’t conducive to daily tasks (especially cleaning up after the bug!). So thank you for the advice and quick replies, I think that is what I will do.

Keri,
Respectfully…welcome to the keto flu. Your body is going to go through a transition period in order to use fat for fuel instead of glucose. It doesn’t want to but you are forcing it to. Some of these changes includes digestion. The old gut bile salts and enzymes and intestine microbiome that digested a high sugar low fat diet doesn’t work very good at digesting the new foods so the body has to rid it and rebuild with new bacteria strains that are more efficient at digesting high fat consumption. The whole time there is the old ways within the body that are fighting against these changes. This raises he** with the body and makes you feel uncomfortable. The extent is an n=1 think so level and time frame have no specifics. Stay strong and motor through because the other side of the battle is so worth it!:muscle::metal::ok_hand:

Hi Ron, and thanks for the welcome, lol. I have actually not had a terrible time with the keto flu; keeping my salt and electrolytes up seems to be the key there. I am also taking supplements that I took previously when I did a doctor advised program. I can handle the “keto flu”, but this was a gastroenteritis episode. Both my kids had it, and it literally brought me to my knees. I am feeling better today but last night was particularly bad. I haven’t totally been crazy, mainly just bananas and applesauce (unsweetened). So hopefully it will be easy to get back on track. Thanks for the encouragement though; I know this is a life change and I am willing to stick to it in the long run.
