Hello

I’m have been feeling all out of whack lately and feel like a fasting would be very helpful. I’m not necessarily new to fasting as I completed a six day water fast. But that was years ago. I have been trying to fast but can’t seem to start or stay on track. I’m hoping this time I can stick to my fasting goals. My goal is to complete a five day water fast. I’m starting tomorrow and hope I can stay strong and make it past the initial headaches and cravings that come with fasting.

Hello @CarolCurls2942 When I went keto again this time around I started with a 4-day water fast. The first day went OK, hungry but not too bad. The second day ‘carb hunger’ hit with a vengeance. I describe carb hunger as the flesh-eating plant in the movie Little Shop of Horrors demanding to be fed incessantly. I found the best way to deal with it was to keep busy doing stuff. Anything to distract me from wanting to eat. The morning of day 3 carb hunger was gone and I was into keto hunger. Once there, you can kiss carbs goodbye forever, if you want to.

I describe keto hunger as the accountant at the monthly board meeting making the announcement that outflow exceeded income the previous month and the company had to dip into cash reserves to make up the shortfall.

Cheers. :sunglasses:

Are you fat adapted? eating enough?

I would recommend starting with something a little easier… do some 36hr fasts and strengthening your fasting muscle before you go long.

But remember on all fasts, if you feel off or unwell, end the fast.

I’m not to sure what you mean by “fat adapted”. I’m going do a some research on that.

Fat adapted is where you you body is now using fat as its primary energy source. If you are fasting and your body is still using glycogen as energy then you probably are going to run into some problems especially if you are doing a longer fast. I am fat adapted and my longest fast I have done is 44 hours.

This may help. However old you are, you ate SAD that many years. How many days, weeks or months have you been eating keto? Whatever, it’s a small fraction of your SAD years. During your SAD years, the cells and organs of your body got accustomed to getting energy from glucose and storing fat. Now you’re feeding those cells and organs fat instead of glucose.

Many people new to keto seem to expect some kind of magic or miracle to occur and then get disappointed when it doesn’t. Just like when you decide to change a habit, it takes time and perseverance. Eventually, your cells and organs will get the message that fat is now the only option on the menu and get with the program. Over time they will get better at using the fat for all the energy they need. Fat adaptation just means that you get more efficient at it.
