Hello newbie here. I have been on a road of trying to lose my weight and get healthy for too long to count. I have polycystic kidney disease So fat I’m doing well and have not had to go the route of dialysis. I was always warned by my nephrologist to watch my protein intake, phosphorous and potassium as well as sodium. But that was all. Through the years I have slowly gained weight but couldn’t get it off.

In January, I came across Trim Healthy Mama but slowly realized it will not work for me because of the high protein demands in the diet. So I broke down and just googled how to lose weight with kidney disease and BAM! Jason Fung came up. I am currently trying to watch all his videos etc. just not entirely sure if it is okay for kidney patients since his main concern is diabetics. At this time that is not an issue but know that I have a high chance for it and high blood pressure.

Another issue is finances. Our family is a one income family of four with a $300-350 food budget per month. I read that it should be perfectly possible by not buying anymore carbs and transferring that money to good carbs-veggies and berries. That most fruit is not the way to go.

BUT. I’m so lost. So overwhelmed.

My family likes their hamburgers on buns. Would cloud Bread work? Or those almond buns? Or there is no replacement?

Also when I tried the Trim Healthy Mama (THM) I found out I had a huge allergy to Okra and stevia. So I went back to Splenda. We have pets so xylitol can’t be used. And to be honest afraid of trying any more replacement sugars, do not like the feeling of not being able to swallow or breathe. Will Splenda be okay?

Also watching Jason Fung videos, mentioned that whey protein is bad. I use it but only half the scoop. So is pea protein powder the way to go?

Fasting…I don’t think will be an issue since most days this is what I have done. I usually don’t eat till around 3pm. But after that I’m eating till I go to bed, which is around 9pm. Is that bad? Was always told by doctor not good, that this is why I keep gaining weight. My problem my stomach just can’t handle food most days before 3pm. Then my next issue is because my stomach is upset, I tend to eat toast to help it. What do I replace that with?

I’m hoping that this is the solution.

  1. Splenda is just fine, you can also try erythritol

  2. I would suggest dropping the protein powder. Keto is moderate protein, and liquid protein and protein powders are absorbed very fast which is undesirable. Just get protein from meat, eggs, fish, cheese, etc
1-1.5g of protein per kg of lean body mass is all you need. I eat around 50g of protein for example.

  3. Not eating until three is fine. If you arent hungry then dont eat. I would suggest not grazing though. Eat separate meals (or one meal) with no snacks. If youre hungry between meals add more fat to your meals.

  4. Something easy on the stomach would be like a handful of macedamia nuts, a keto muffin, a keto english muffin (toasted?), or something like that

  5. Yes you could try cloud bread, or almond flour buns, etc. What youll like best is really just gonna be a case of trying them.

  6. Yes keto can be affordable. Put the money into meat, and fat, eggs, low carb veggies, almond flour, etc. We found that by making our own food and eating keto our food budget was cut in half. We just… eat a lot less honestly.

Standard suggestions:
<20g of carbs per day
1-1.5g of protein per kg of lean body mass
fat to satiety
don’t count calories
try not to snack if possible

Hope that helps!

Luckily, the meat with high fat are often more affordable (at least here in Norway). I think this is due to the general misconception in the population that the leaner meats are more desirable :stuck_out_tongue: So stock up and fill the freezer when you come across good fatty cuts

Other people covered most of it but I will point out a few things.
Dr. Fung is a nephrologist, that is his main gig so he knows about the kidneys, you can ask specific stuff on his site as well.
Moneywise Keto is way cheaper to me, but primarily because I gave up what you are mentioning above, not just buns but the idea that high carb foods can be replaced with alternatives. You can get something that works as bread, but it isn’t like you’d fool anybody, desserts can be good as well, but I find that trying to duplicate a high carb food with low carb options is just too expensive. Sugar and flour substitutes are 3-10 times what their carb counterpart is, and the end result is just an expensive so-so version most of the time. Embrace what you can have and learn to make recipes with thick, buttery sauces. The bun on a burger doesn’t have hardly any flavor, it just gets the good stuff to your mouth, add some bacon or avocado and an egg to it and eat it with a fork.
I make a lot of BBQ, you can feed a lot for cheap and if you are good nobody would even think to put sauce on it and rarely a bun. I cooked pulled pork for 50 people last weekend, they used about 10 buns and 6oz of sauce, and most of that was for kids.
Fire up the grill, or smash up pork rinds and add some cream and eggs for a dredge, fry up a mess of chicken and don’t worry a damn bit about the grease, you’re on a diet!

Long story short, don’t regret what you can’t have and spend time and money making poor substitutes and embrace all the great things you can have when you don’t have to worry about fat.

Edit: how far SW are you? I am in NWA
