Newbie Here. Loving Keto WOE!

(Evelyn Sullivan) #1

Hello Friends!
I’m new here and just wanted to briefly introduce myself. I started a ketogenic diet about 2 months ago – and am truly loving it. I’ve lost about 20 lbs so far. I have done a lot of research on the keto woe, read several books, have been on/off numerous FB groups, and listen to a few podcasts. Now trying to scale it down to cut down on the “noise.” I think this forum will accomplish that (after I find myself around the forums and get comfortable). Love 2ketodudes podcast with @carl and @richard - very informative and entertaining!

Welcome! This is definately an awesome place to be. Everyone here is wonderful. I’m only two weeks in and I’m loving it too. I only hope I can drop as much as you that quickly! What books do you recommend?

Hey there, welcome!
I’m quite new to this forum as well, but I can tell you, it is really a great place for support, and science, info, links, recipes and other hacks so to speak.
This is my second go 'round with the Keto WOE and I think I am on a much better footing this time. I didn’t have the support or as much knowledge regarding, for example, protein and knew nothing about IF or full fasting.
Best wishes

Fab. Welcome. x

Thanks for welcoming me. I’m looking forward to my keto journey here on the forums. My favorite book is Keto Clarity (by Jimmy Moore and Dr. Eric Westman). You may have heard of it. What I like about it is it is well-written, entertaining, and extremely informative. They explain the science behind keto (in an understandable way), the benefits, medical/health conditions it may be beneficial for, and the criticism and negative publicity this WOE has received. Bottom line… it’s not just another cookbook (although it does include some recipes, this isn’t the main thrust of the book). Most of the other books I’ve read are either primarily cookbooks, or just not very informative or interesting. Good luck on your journey!

Oh wonderful! I will have to check that one out. As you said most books are just not informative enough. Don’t get me wrong having a cook book is nice, but I was looking for something more on the research behind it.

The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living is what you’re after.

(Gabe “No Dogma, Only Science Please!” ) #8

Also, this. Trust me. Loads of great studies for you to read there.

Wonderful thank you! My husband is still a bit of a skeptic so I’m hoping a book with some scientific research will help me convince him.

Oh and Why We Get Fat by Gary Taubes. That’s a walk through the history of the science around diet and nutrition. He comes from a journalist’s perspective. That book contains everything you need.

There’s a number of studies that are frequently cited. One of the most convincing is one done by a researcher at Stanford who wanted to prove the vegan diet was superior. It was called the A to Z study. It ended up proving that Atkins is superior on almost every metric. It’s linked in the link I provided above as the very first recommended study for you to read.

Hello everyone so glad for the forum! I choose not to be a part of social media due to the over abundance of negativity. Back Keto for around 2 weeks. Down from 330+ to 312 excited to watch others journey together.

You can also show your husband my anecdotal experience: my cardiologist here in NYC saw my results and while he prefers a lower meat product intake in the diet, he’s quite prepared to let me see how this experiment plays out.

And more importantly: he and pretty much every other physician will agree with these basic principles: cut out sugar and processed foods. Once you’ve done that, we’re now arguing purely about the correct macronutrient mix, but if you’re eating plenty of vegetables and some whole grains along with fish and meat and healthy fats, you’re doing better than 90% of the population and you’re already halfway to a low carb diet anyway.

Split the difference with any skeptics: the bottom line is, we agree on more than we disagree on. Keep it simple. No sugar, no processed foods. That’s 80-90% of the argument basically resolved from the get-go.

One of the reasons he is willing to try it out with me is because he believes that cutting the processed crap and sugar is one of the keys to being healthy. Right now im working on convincing him that the high fat part is important too.

What is Keto WOE?

(Carpe salata!) #15

The Way Of Eating that puts the body into nutritional ketosis.

Nutritional ketosis is a metabolic mode where the body is using fats rather than sugars as the main energy source. In fact, the body will then top up sugars by using the liver to create the glucose needed. That is gluconeogenesis.

With nutritional ketosis, insulin stays low and risk of diabetes and heart disease are much reduced.

Thank you for answering my question and for the helpful info.
