Newbie going on Vacation

(Mary M.) #1

I’m about 3 weeks into this new lifestyle and according to what I have read, I’m thinking I’m doing about average. I love it and I look forward to releasing the weight.
I would love to hear suggestions on what to do when on vacation in Europe.

Thanks

Mary

What part of Europe? Are you staying in hotels?

(Mary M.) #3

We are going to Amsterdam, as my daughter is living there. We will be staying in a hotel.

I’m not sure about Amsterdam, but breakfast at hotels are generally good. I’ve found a lot of meats, cheeses yogurt, even super thinly sliced but heavy “breads” that aren’t bad. I could help more if it was Germany, France, Italy, Sweden, but I don’t know about Amsterdam/the Netherlands.

I am living in Germany. When staying in a hotel in Europe for breakfast there are usually ham, eggs, salmon, cheese and vegetables. So breakfast usually is not a problem.
In a restaurant I look for menu entries without starches. Ask for more vegetables for compensation.

Thank you for your responses. I guess it’s pretty simple…just keep it simple.

Personally I say enjoy your vacation and not worry too much about it. You can always get right back on when you return. Enjoy life

Traveling like this can be a challenge, If you were used to fasting, I would say fast all the way out and back, as the food on the flights is usually bad, if you’re not in first class.

I have had some interesting experiences. One of the best burgers I’ve ever had was in my hotel in Germany. I just got there and they only offered two meals, as they were booked with a special event. The burger had egg on it. It was great. The next day, I went to German restaurants (was in Munich), and that was pretty easy to stay low carb.

I went to Finland, and went to…a French restaurant. Had the horse-cheek stew. It was fantastic. (I asked the waitress what to get, and she suggested this.) Did have reindeer later, though.

I flew into Paris, very late…and the only thing that was open was an Italian restaurant. I had pizza (these were low carb days, but sometimes you gotta eat), which was quite good (or maybe I was hungry). The next morning, I went and found my duck confit, complete with small plate of potatoes swimming in cheese and butter. Yum.

I always try to go where the locals go, learn their customs, eat their food. But I can’t help you there, as I’ve never been to Amsterdam. Don’t be afraid to ask what to eat, where to go, etc. If your daughter is there, you’ll have a huge head start.

You shouldn’t have any problem. There is plenty of meat and seafood at the restaurants. Be careful of the sauces though. Many of the rich sauces contain flour.

Breakfast is never a problem as others have mentioned. Stick with the meats, cheeses, eggs and plain yogurt. If you’re a beer drinker you may have trouble finding low carb beer.

You’ve had some great experiences! I’ve been to Amsterdam in May but I wasn’t doing Keto. They are big on french fries with mayo! That was fun. lol I’m thinking that it might be challenging to get enough fat in but I will do my best.

I’m living in Europe not far away from Amsterdam, actually when l went there one month ago it is when lmstarted my Keto journey.
I highly recommend the cute and trendy artisan burger places where u compose your bunless burger(s) as you wish : truffle mayo, avocado, extra fried mushrooms, cheese…
l bought MTC oil and added that to my coffees.
If u have more questions about European dishes do not hesitate to message me! Enjoy the trip!
