Tell me more about this. I’m switching to the salts because MCT seems to trigger flares. I use a keto-mojo (which is far from perfect), and do therapeutic keto, so I’m not just chasing numbers.
You may like the salts. I bought them for my mother, who had a lot of issues as she got older. I was hoping to get her to take them, but she never did and ended up passing away.
So, I took them. They made me a little “nervous”, I thought. Maybe “shaky” would be a better term.
I tried multiple sets of these:
These made me feel okay, but I never really noticed anything.
And I can’t remember what the terminology is, but the ketone meters only can test for one version of BHB. There’s another version that’s chemically the same, but “flipped”, and the ketone meters can’t register that. So, your meter might show a lower ketone value than you have. I also don’t know which exogenous ketones have this issue.
My searches are coming up empty. We need a chemist to chime in.
Ground beef patties, steak, wings or legs, beef ribs, ground beef skillet (ground beef with some chopped veggies sautéed together), or something in or from the pressure cooker that I freeze in portions for later, occasionally bone-canned salmon or salmon filet from Aldi. Roughly a pound of raw, fatty meat a day, sometimes in two meals, sometimes in more like one. I add fat to meet my number there- I’m 80% fat and 20% protein + net carbs. If I log my food for the day before I start eating, I do better.
Well done on your macro percentage! How long have you been doing this? Thank for sharing your typical daily meals. Hopefully I can eventually manage my macro percentage also. Still very early on my keto diet, but hopefully I’ll get there.
I’ve been at it for a year- was carnivore for 18 months maybe before that. I added some plant foods back (I don’t tolerate many), but I crave more protein. Still finding the sweet spot.
Not everyone needs my level of macros. I’m managing some autoimmune stuff, and the ketones really help.
I have gout for years now. Just taking 100mg allopurinol as medication everyday. This is also the reason why I am trying Keto because hopefully the diet will fix my gout, or help with the inflammation. Has anyone have gout issues here?
I don’t have gout (a different inflammatory arthritis). Everything I read suggests easing into keto for those who have gout. Like mental illness, things could briefly worse before they get better. ETA- being on a med should help with the transition.
I had a gout incident at the end of my first year of keto (2016) and after it went away, my doc (GP) left me on the allopurinol. After about a year of that and having my uric acid tested a few times, I asked if since that was normal, do we withdraw the medicine? His answer was that the experience with gout is so bad that most people just take it “forever” rather than take the chance of gout again. I’ve had occasional problems with that joint (left big toe) which I figure are just “plain arthritis” but never tried to get it tested. It’s enough to remind me that the gout was similar but the pain was worse. So I stick with the allopurinol and keto.
Just getting over a gout attack here, due to my own stupidity.
Friday - party for a niece’s birthday. 4 or 5 drinks over a long evening. Hamburgers, sausage… 3 of the drinks were beer.
Saturday, no trouble. Sunday, did a lot of work - mowing the yard, digging, hoeing, etc., in the garden. Sunday night, mixed a big drink for myself and one for my wife; she didn’t want it so I drank them both.
Monday, pain in left foot began- top of the foot above the arch, and the ankle. Got worse Monday night. Was taking my Allopurinol all along… Tuesday was no fun at all. Pain had settled in the common big toe joint, a thing I’ve had many times.
Could not put weight on the big toe side of my foot. I mean there was just no way… Walking awkwardly like that starts to mess everything up, knees, hips, back…
Wednesday, little better. Thursday, significantly better. Today (Friday) disappointing - actually felt like the pain was worse than yesterday.
But it’s on the way out. Just really need to stay away from the booze…
I honestly don’t know how to answer that. I had one episode of gout that had me go to the doctor, back in April of '16, and never another. I’ve been full keto since '15, coincidentally in April so about a year before I had the gout. I’m still taking the allopurinol. It was the full up “hurts to look at it” gout and truly awful. Nothing like it since.
Looks like you are doing well in maintaining your gout flareups and keto diet. Have you had concerns about losing muscle mass when you got into keto? Because in my case, I just wanted to maintain my muscle and not lose weight (as I am already slim!), and at the same time, minimize (or completely) stop all my gout flareups by doing a keto diet…
No more than just losing muscle mass due to aging. I find it strange to think that I really didn’t think that my desk job work would contribute to general fitness and moving better. I started jogging during the running fad of the '70s, so 50-ish years ago, and transitioned to long distance bicycling in the early '90s (much easier on the knees) but didn’t pay attention to upper body. When I retired, the little things I did a hundred times a day went away and I started to notice arms and shoulders were less flexible and hurt more often. I kept riding regularly, so I added some work with weights, pushups, sit-ups, that kind of stuff.
When a typical week is riding around 80 miles, the idea that walking into and out of the building 5 days a week, along with all the little things, doesn’t seem like it matters, but it did.
Has the keto stopped all your gout flareups?
Once every 90 days or so, when it’s time to renew the allopurinol, I think about not taking it anymore but I’ve just never quit.
Several to many are, including me. I’ve noticed really nothing from creatine, positive or negative. I’m finishing my second jar of it and trying to notice anything. It’s essentially a vitamin, and is more common in beef, so I’m guessing in keto people - and especially keto carnivores (ketovores?) who eat more beef - it probably causes weight loss in the wallet, as well as loss of lean wallet mass.
