Newbie From Amarillo with sleeping problems

(Donna Ashley) #1

Hey Y’all! I needed to see if any of you have problems getting to sleep and then sleeping restlessly. For the last 3 nights my sleep has been awful. I finally have my blood sugar below 200, for like the first time in 6 months. I tried magnesium citrate 500mg, chamomile tea before bed and ACV/lemon drink as well…it didn’t work. I’ve been doing Keto for 1 1/2 weeks now. My friend says it could be the cabbage causing intestinal stress (as this is this week’s vegetable.) I’d appreciate any advice.

Great news on the lower BG! Sorry you are having sleep issues. It should even out. Too many changes/tweaks at one time might be your culprit. You are a stronger person than I, to eat no veg but cabbage for an entire week! I mean, I like it, but … asparagus. Cauliflower. Brussels sprouts. Zucchini. Green beans! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Hi Donna!

About the sleep issue.

This happens often, when you put your body into a caloric deficit, it’s not a keto specific issue. I am experiencing the same problem right now, I used to be a hard sleeper, no kind of noise could distract my sleep.

Today things are the opposite, I find it difficult to fall asleep and to get enough deep sleep. I will wake up several times during the night for every small sound whats around me. There are many factors that can cause this (including the caloric deficit, stress (<BIG ONE), lifestyle choices and usage of smart devices).

How I fixed the problem for myself:

  1. The bedroom needs to be 100% blacked out from any kind of light.
  2. I do not use any kind of smart devices 1 hour before going to bed.
  3. I go to bed at the same time every day (this is has a big effect on your body)
  4. I started using “f.lux” on my computer - removes all the blue lightning from my computer screen (read more here justgetflux .com) < this had the biggest impact on my sleep problems
  5. Lately, I also started testing out taking melatonin pills. They actually work very well, I get enough deep sleep. But I don’t think one should rely their sleep based on pills. This is more like a quick fix to get your mind straight after a sleepless night, but please do not rely on this.

Good luck

Many good suggestions above. On the “Keto Talk” podcast released today, Dr. Cole suggested some natural remedies for a listener who was having trouble staying asleep. Taking an epsom salt bath (magnesium) can be helpful too.
