Newbie and I'm Starving

So my husband and I just started Keto today. He got an 8 week mealplan from ketofitdiet site and it says for breakfast to have bulletproof coffee then lunch was 2 hard boiled eggs with 2 strips of bacon, dinner will be Salmon, avocado cream and cauliflower rice.

My question is: are we not allowed to eat keto snacks in between? I am hungry and wondering if we’re doing something wrong here.

Thanks for any guidance here!

Absolutely, feel free to snack. When first transitioning to a ketogenic way of eating your system is going to be super confused and you might feel hungry even after s major meal because your system is craving carbs that you’re no longer providing. Online calculators and meal plan guides are good for getting food ideas and finding hidden carbs, but your best bet is to stick to the basics:

  • 20 grams or less of carbs
  • moderate protein scaled to lean body mass
  • fat to satiety

Don’t count calories. The only fat “goal” is satiety. When you’re hungry, eat; and eat FAT.

It can take a couple weeks for your body to get used to the absence of carbs, and there is a carb withdrawal (aka keto flu), and it can take a couple months or more to become fat adapted. Once you get to that point, your appetite will go down as your body starts to recognize stored fat as available energy.

The carb withdrawal period CAN be the toughest part, but it’s also the best time to hit Surf and Turf night at the buffet and load up on crab and steak, because once you reach fat adaptation you’ll probably find you eat so little that buffets just aren’t worth it anymore.

Definitely sounds like way too little fat and calories

Yep this sounds familiar. The first 1 to 2 weeks are the toughest. Eat when you’re hungry. Don’t worry about cutting outs snacking until you don’t get hungry between meals. I used avocados, sliced cucumbers drenched in blue cheese dressing, olives, Tillamoos cheese snacks, string cheese, Baby Bel cheese snacks, pepperoni, sliced ham spread with cream cheese roll-ups, pork rinds (sometimes spread with cream cheese), tuna (or chicken or egg) salad with lots of mayo and flavorful add ins (like diced pickles, green olives, sharp cheddar chunks, celery or water chestnuts - for crunch, hot sauce or Dijon mustard), etc… I was hungry all the time for those first couple of weeks. It eases off and finally goes away as your body adapts to using fat for energy production (fat from your food and fat from your body).

Also, drink plenty of water. Supplement electrolytes (google ketoaide recipes, or search here on the forum).

Good luck! And keep us posted. We’ll all be rooting for you
