New to Ketosis and keen to learn more

Hi,
My wife and I watched the “Magic Pill” documentary on Netflix and finally realised the main reason it is so hard to lose weight and keep it off. A few months ago we gave up eating bread which is a staple for most Aussies, you can’t eat anything without your food being wrapped or sandwiched between two slices. The first thing she noticed was that a small wart on her finger had completely disappeared within weeks, and we’ve naturally both lost weight because we don’t use butter anymore either. After watching the Magic Pill doco, we were blown away by this new knowledge (to us anyway) of having a diet a low fat, high in carbohydrates, wheat whole grains, wholemeal, bran and all the other propaganda that we’ve believed; was not correct. I really believe the indigenous aboriginals had it right in the way they ate food that was not reliant on carbohydrates. We look forward to reading more about the process of Ketosis and how everyone does that here. Thanks for the very helpful posts.

Welcome to the forums! You’ll fit right in; we have a lot of Aussies. And of course, one of the Dudes is an Aussie himself.

The Show me the Science forum has a lot of useful information; there is also one for newbies, with lots of stuff you might find helpful. Don’t be afraid to explore. The search button is your friend. There are certain sections that are closed until you’ve reached a certain trust level, but those restrictions generally go away quite soon.

Welcome! Im Aussie too!
There are lots of friendly people here full of knowledge, they are extremely helpful.
I watched the Magic Pill too and I was sad to learn about the aboriginal history in that sense.

@PaulL & @ava_ad0re thanks for the warm welcome. Man I’ve had problems with weight over the years, the biggest thing for me is learning how to KEEP it off. I’m a life member of Jenny Craig’s (can I say that), that’s how desperate things got but I also learned a lot about how to lose weight very quickly or not. We just bought ourselves a treadmill (so there’s no excuse for not walking) which is great for controlling the rate of loss.It seems to me that I put back the weight faster if I lose it too quickly. Also I think controlling calories doesn’t do it for me, I get bored real quick with bland food and that’s usually when I give up. Hopefully if I can harness some of the knowledge you people know about Ketosis, I may be able to keep the weight off for longer or even permanently.

Why no butter anymore?

Hi! There is lots of new stuff to learn on these forums. For example:

  1. Counting calories doesn’t work. So just stop doing it.
  2. Butter is good, so eat more of it, unless you have some kind of allergy?
  3. Exercise is not required here, but is always healthy if you want to do it. But don’t be thinking that you have to exercise to spend calories to lose weight. Incorrect thinking and will not work.
  4. This diet actually teaches us WHY we are overweight, and provides the answer on how to lose weight long term. It is not calories in calories out, but hormonal regulation driven by carb intake.

Welcome!! Hang out here and watch and learn and search and ask. It is great fun, very educational, and just works!

We were eating, on average, four loaves of whole meal bread a week. That meant we also went through about 3-4lbs of butter with that. I should say we haven’t eliminated butter altogether because I do use it for cooking but not on the same scale. Now this was all BEFORE we discovered what Ketosis is all about. So now rather than feeling guilty about bringing home fatty bacon or steaks with a nice band of fat around them, I can go back to my old ways of eating plenty of red meat and not worry about the fat at all. The issue for me was really about consuming too much carbs. I don’t miss the bread at all. Without even knowing about Ketosis I think I’ve been doing a bit of it just naturally, for example I don’t exercise after main meals, I’ll do that before breakfast and before dinner. That’s when I feel like I’m burning the body fat the most. I also don’t eat anything (sometimes I fall off that wagon) after 8:00pm, so I do not have any food from 8:00pm until around 8:00am. Its a bit like a mini fast every day. Before I hit breakfast I’m on the treadmill for 20 minutes, and back on it for another 20 minute walk before dinner say 4:00pm; the weight just falls off me.

You’ve got it! You’re on the road. Well done, enjoy butter, steaks, bacon, fat. Well done on dropping that bread. Note that there are keto versions of bread to cook if you want them. There’s usually a keto version of every carb food. Want pizza? We got a keto one of those… enjoy!

Go back to enjoying your butter, just not on bread. Use good amounts of it to cook with and coat your vegetables with or top of your meat with it. It’s perfectly acceptable with Keto.

Yes I can see that the approach with Ketogenics is to get the body to access its own fat reserves for energy rather than the carb/sugar process. For me exercise is something I really need to do, I spent a year doing no exercise at all and I felt terrible most of the time and could hardly mow my lawns without inducing a heart attack. So for me the bonus of walking every day is that I can keep fit and burn body fat at the same time. We’ve been told such a huge lie about what we should be eating (high fibre, low fat) to stay healthy it makes me angry to think I was fighting a losing battle for many years, losing weight, and then gaining it back again. If someone had told me before how much damage wheat does to our bodies, I’d have weaned myself off bread and other carbs a long time ago.

You may find less need and more enjoyment in exercising on keto. I don’t enjoy exercise for its own sake, and yet the weight is still staying off. I am finding, however, that I am enjoying physical activity more—as long as I don’t think of it as exercise, lol!

(Terence Dean) #12

Yeah I’m deliberately setting a pace or pattern of exercise that I can comfortably maintain after I’ve got to my goal weight. So far its working quite well, I’m not craving anything. When I was on calorie controlled diets I noticed that I was always hungry, had cravings for fast food, sugar, etc. This diet is a whole lot better, it remains to be seen whether it stays that way.

Don’t blame butter for what the bread did!

Welcome! And the exercise that’s good with keto would be low level cardio, keeping your heart rate low to mainly burn fat, as when it gets high enough, your muscles start going through their glycogen fast.
