New to keto: I'm 17 and need help

I totally got that. It’s just hard for me to not take a stab at corporate funded health organizations. There’s a lot of money to be made on diabetes… sadly.

Great numbers, Bob! :+1:

I researched alot before starting…the rule I followed is keep under 30 gm net carbs a day and the protein for your weight would be 122 gm per day … this worked for me…just an idea

Thank you Paul :sunglasses:.

This was by far the largest lab test I have ever had. Most of it is meaningless to me. I even tried looking up a half dozen or so with no success. I figure the VA is using its own codes for the tests, only some of which line up with the common ones used.

My Blood pressure was really high. 190/120 (thereabouts) so the tested it two more times and it eventually went down to 160/90. Not good still, but a little better. So my PC wants to add a secondary BP med. I don’t remember the name of it, but he said it works alongside the one I’m already taking . But I made sure it wasn’t one of those combo drugs being pushed. The BP Statin combo. I then informed him that I’m just shelving the statins they keep mailing me. That I refuse to take statins. To my amazement he took the statin order off my list of meds. I told him I really don’t think my Cholesterol matters at all, for the reasons he thinks it does anyway. Especially for numbers that are considered ‘borderline high’. To me the borderline range is just an excuse to write more scripts. I didn’t tell him that part though. Don’t want any animosity .

But you don’t want protein by total weight. You want it by lean body mass. That number could be vastly different. You want enough protein to sustain the muscle mass you have.

In my opinion, too much protein might be robbing your body of opportunity to recycle some unneeded protein. Such as the excess skin we have hanging around when we lose weight. My muffin top is nearly gone after loosing 50 pounds. It was very evident after my first 40 pounds in two weeks. I had skin folding down over my belt :cold_sweat:. Looked like I was hiding a snake around my waist under my shirt

What’s the term… autophagy? I could be wrong, but it makes sense.

So how much protein do I want to eat? Should I keep track? There is sooo much info. I read .45 x my lbs which is 240 would equal how many grams of protein per day…so I was going to keep track and see how far off 108 grm it is… did that make sense? Lol

Protein should be .8 to 1.5 grams per Kilogram of LEAN body weight. Not total weight. You don’t need to be exact. I would just start out with what avg lean body weight for your age, height, sex. Start there.

I pretty much simplified mine and I’m doing ok with this, 75% fat 25% protein. I might be a little high or low on protein. But once I’m able to, I’ll start working out, and get a better grasp on my own lean body mass and go from there.

You should listen to the 2ketoDudes podcasts. Start with the first one, it pretty much explains keto. After listening to the first few to get an understanding, I’d suggest jumping around the podcasts looking at the titles for something that you’re curious about. TONS of good information in them.

Yep, the first ones are good.

The real problem is not so much the systolic (top) number, which is peak pressure, but when the diastolic (bottom) number is high, because that means the pressure is constantly high. Ninety is not great, but it’s not all that terrible, either.

The 160/90 reading might have been the result of a failing BP cuff. I had that problem a few times when I was in the hospital a couple of years ago. They were giving me opioids for the pain, so they were taking vital signs several times a day. Every now and then a reading would be way out of whack, and a couple of times the nurse actually junked the cuff. I also learned that you’ll get weird readings if you use a leg cuff on an arm, or vice versa.

Hey man good to hear you’re on the right track. I’m 23 and was about 20 when I started getting in shape. I’m 5’11” and 170 lbs but 17-19 I was around 235-240. My best advice is keep tight eating window and keep your meals simple. People want to get fancy and make all these keto meals that immiate carb heavy food. But when I was first starting I went ribeye and spinach one meal a day and I haven’t changed it up much since. Find yourself a good staple meal you enjoy.

Lift weights every other day. I went from full body workouts every other day to a push/pull split with a little bit of leg and abs in both workouts. On the days off lifting take walks on a nature trail. I make sure I’m taking good breathes through my nose the whole time.

Make sure you get a good nights sleep! Sleeping is very important when it comes to weight loss. It’s a whole hormonal process and you can do plenty of research on it.

After you’ve gone hard on a keto or low carb high fat diet for awhile and feel fat adapted and if you want to take it to the next level start researching up on fasting.

Good luck bro

Can’t give this enough likes!

You cannot go wrong, going ribeye!

Indeed. My favorite cut of steak. In a close second comes something I previously would never had considered just a year ago, pork belly.

Pork belly is about 75% fat 25% protein. Search through this site and find some great recipes for it.

When you buy pork bellies though, I recently learned you got to make sure the seller understands you want pork belly, not pork stomach. Big difference .

(Carl Keller) #35

I would totally love to try some pork belly, but I can’t seem to find any in the stores I shop at…

Search for an Asian center of some kind. It doesn’t have to be like China Town in San Francisco, but there is a chain of grocery stores called 99 Ranch that cater to a widely diverse American Asian population. The one in Phoenix was as huge as any other chain store. So imagine that, but just mostly imports. I’m fairly sure any Asian market will have it. It’s highly popular with Filipino, as well as Korean. In Korea it’s a delicacy, and very expensive. So it’s most likely going to be very pricey in a place like that.

Ask your local butcher. I’m sure they have pork. No reason they can’t get pork belly. It will be well worth the effort, I assure you.

I just need to motivate myself to drive to the other side of town. There’s this strip district meat market where I got some melt in your mouth Delmonicos summer before last. I bet they have pork belly too. Thanks for the tip!

Recently found out you can microwave eggs too.

(Running from stupidity) #40

Even better, you can sous vide them!
