New to Keto and Looking Forward to Learning From Everyone

(joyleen) #1

Hi everyone!

I just joined the forum and wanted to introduce myself. I’ve been reading about keto for a while, and there seems to be so much information out there that it’s hard to know what’s actually useful.I’m here to learn from people who have real experience. Whether you’ve been eating keto for a few months or several years, I’d love to hear what made the biggest difference for you when you were starting out.

Was there a simple habit, meal idea, or mindset that helped you stay consistent? And if you made any beginner mistakes, what would you do differently now? Looking forward to learning, asking questions, and hopefully contributing along the way. Thanks for having me!

Welcome! I started with Atkins and went from there. My biggest acquired habit was and is to plan my menu on a daily basis. That way there is very little room for error.

Count carbs & stick to 20g or less… Keep up with electrolytes… I kept off sweeteners in the early days too, or it’ll keep the cravings for sweet stuff going.

Thanks for the warm welcome and for sharing your advice! Planning meals ahead definitely sounds like a habit I need to build. I can see how having a plan would make it much easier to avoid grabbing something that doesn’t fit. Keeping carbs low and paying attention to electrolytes also seems to be a common theme, so I’ll make sure to focus on that from the start.

I hadn’t really thought about avoiding sweeteners in the beginning, but it makes sense if it helps reduce cravings. I appreciate you both taking the time to help a beginner. Looking forward to learning more from everyone as I go!

Welcome! This forum isn’t as busy as it was at some point and I am always glad if someone comes and want to chat!

I have been doing on and off keto since several years but I am a low-carber since way longer and that’s way easier for me so I am way more consistent regarding that, my higher-carb days are rare. I just want to feel right, with or without ketosis. It turned out less plants are better for me but some is fine.

I don’t consider them beginner mistakes, I needed changes first… But I ate too much plant carbs on vegetarian keto, apparently. And I still missed my vegs as I couldn’t afford a proper veggie dish with my carb allowance… Keto wasn’t nearly as easy as my previous diet and it didn’t give me much beyond fat adaptation (and this forum). And I totally blame the plant carbs for that. “Much” carbs are fine for me as long as it’s from animal products. But this is individual, some people experience it’s better for them to eat more plants and fiber. It’s understandable if someone need some time and experiments to find the right keto style (if it exists to begin with). Just because keto doesn’t seem to work, it may be that it needs fine tuning or, as in my case, some more serious one (I abandoned most plants for meat at some point, it was quite a big change as plant carbs affect even my mental state regarding food. being close to carnivore is wonderfully chill for me).

I always tracked on my original keto (unlike on low-carb) as I was curious and anyway, I had to track in order not to overdo the carbs. I don’t need to track on carnivore for the latter reason and it’s not really possible anyway as the macros of my meat is anybody’s guess (I do try to guess, if I am merely off by 400 kcal, it’s still informative). Tracking showed me things, what is satiating, how my body and mind behaves if I neglect protein, how much I can eat on a carnivore day, what is the leanest I can eat day to day (it was 65% fat for ages). Tracking every day is no way to live (unless it’s simple) but for a while or sometimes? It can be informative. But if one doesn’t need it, that’s the best. I try to play with my items and meal timing to avoid tracking (though I get curious sometimes).

I don’t know if you need some nice variety, I do. It’s easy even on carnivore, we have so many options. On mere keto, basically everything is allowed. I liked that freedom of keto, there is no banned items at all - though some doesn’t seem a great idea but amounts matter. And if it’s really important for us. We want this to work for the unforeseeable future, it can’t be a struggle! At least my personality isn’t like that, I am a hedonist and if my diet is less enjoyable than my previous one, it won’t last. I like my keto dishes but I made many recipes myself. But there are great existing recipes, I fondly remember some I have learned here. They usually are normal recipes many people use, just very low-carb

I met many people who followed that route. I needed my sweets on my original keto (I ate everything else with vegs so carbs, couldn’t keep my carbs low enough without lots of cake) BUT I really cling to my desserts anyway so no way I skip them. THOUGH… On carnivore, I obviously (or not, some people say they are carnivore but use sweeteners. I disagree. carnivore is animal stuff only, yeah lil things like coffee and spices may be fine but sweeteners??? but each to their own), so obviously my carnivore desserts only had natural sugar from dairy. And they weren’t really sweet, not even for me. But sweet enough in the right circumstances. Anyway, (high level of) sweetness is overrated. But I still want my creamy, lovely desserts.
So… It’s individual but I always say if it’s easy (or needed) to cut off sweets, do it, I see several possible benefits. If not, still don’t eat them hungry (unless you know what you are doing. who I am to say one can’t eat dessert as a meal? each to their own), eat some good food when hungry, it’s meat and/or eggs for me. Dessert is just the dot on the i, near the end, not necessarily much and not each and every time.

Welcome!

I have been keto/low carb for 8 years now and the best thing I have ever done for my health. I did Atkins back in the 70’s so I already knew how to eat low carb.

I use Stevia drops in my coffee and never gave up sweeteners. I don’t have sugar cravings so wasn’t an issue with me. I’ll take a bag of potato chips over a piece of cake any day! LOL. But my days of eating more than a handful of chips are gone.

I am 67, btw and looking forward to retiring at the end of 2027.
