Hi, I just started keto 2 weeks ago today and I’ve lost 9 pounds, definitely a good motivator to keep going! So this is how I’ve been feeling: not at all hungry during the day, way more hungry in the evening. I get dizzy a lot which I think means I need more electrolytes. Sometimes I experience upper abdominal pain after I eat, perhaps because I have no gallbladder? I got a breath ketone meter and it is .2 every morning, is it too early to monitor ketones? I started tracking macros a few days ago and had to adjust diet a little, sneaky carbs! I found it hard initially to get enough fat but made some peanut butter chocolate fat bombs which really helped. I’m shocked that I haven’t craved carbs at all! I am having a hard time finding recipes I’ll actually eat, I’m a big fan of casseroles and mixed dishes and all my searching has led to recipes that look vile and I’m not picky. Plus I’m cooking for a family of 5 and I’m the only keto person. I try to make something that I can eat and my family will eat with added pasta, rice, or some other carb. I’m sticking with it, but I am concerned about the abdominal pain in particular and finding more recipes.
New here, have some questions
Welcome!
I wouldn’t even bother tracking at this point.
I used to be in your position of having to cook for a family, but it was hubby who was eating keto. There’s a recipes thread on here, and I’m sure that you can find lots of inspiration there. A year ago I switched to keep because of a cancer diagnosis, so the whole family is now keto (adults and children). Personally, I do lots of baked chicken and salad with a fatty dressing. @Brenda has an awesome baked spaghetti recipe that is totally keep, and I’m sure your whole family would love it.
As far as the abdominal pain, you should mention it to your doctor. I’m sure someone else here who also doesn’t have a gallbladder can comment further.
As far as adding in fat, I drink ½ to 1 cup of heavy cream (with flavored MCT powder) with my evening meal. That alone add in nearly 40-80g of fat.
Also, This pumpkin & cream cheese muffin recipe is high-fat, low-carb and very yummy.
Ox bile salts might help with the pain you’re experiencing with no gallbladder. Just cook meat and vegetables, no fancy dishes are required. The best results are had on KETO keeping it simple anyways.
Good luck and Happy Thanksgiving.
If the whole family likes meat and isn’t choosy in general, it shouldn’t be hard, meat or other nice fatty animal protein (there are really nice egg dishes) and vegetables for you, carby side dishes for those who need/want it. But if the other family members eat very differently too, a common meal might be not an option. I find desserts easy as I can’t make carby ones anyway and keto ones are great, they might help in some situations, keto/low-carb cakes are a staple in my household and it’s usually not me who eats them.
I find eating enough fat easy (way too easy, sadly) as I have fatty protein sources (eggs, some cheese and nuts, now some fatty meat too) but it’s really easy to use some heavy cream, chocolate or something. I ate much fat with my vegetables and they still didn’t feel too fatty. Sweets easily have their dangers so that direction isn’t always a good idea but it helps some, especially in the beginning. It took ages until I arrived to unsweetened chocolate but I never ate a lot of chocolate on keto and never one that contained sugar.
There are tons of good keto recipes but indeed, it might take a lot of time to find them if you don’t eat every popular keto food items or have your very own taste… Sometimes you can tweak the recipes though, I tend to modify recipes a lot and sometimes I just make my own ones but that may take even more time until I do it really right. It helps to base our food on something, be it an old, carbier recipe or a keto one and one eventually learns what they prefer. The beginning is often a bit rough but it’s exciting.
Good luck! Especially with the pain, I can’t help with that at all, unfortunately.
It’s great you don’t crave carbs, sometimes keto does that right away.
