New and a Little Worried Ketones Too High?

(T G) #1

I’m new to keto but I have fasted in the past (and did really well with weight loss). Unfortunately, over the years I’ve gained it back. What’s bugging me now is that after only 7 days, my KetoMojo is measuring blood ketones at 5.0 and 4.8 just a few minutes later. I kind of freaked out and ate something. My blood glucose was 74 and I am not diabetic. I am about 40 lbs over weight and I did walk today for about 35 minutes. Any input? Anyone? Should I be worried? Thanks so much and nice to be here!

Hello and welcome Tammy.

HIgh blood ketone readings might be a reason to worry only if you have type 1 diabetes. People who don’t produce insulin can’t properly manage their BG levels. So if you feel fine I wouldn’t worry.

I feel great and exercise even feels good. I’ll try to relax and stop worrying. Thanks!

You are at NO risk of ketoacidosis, those are great readings.

Thanks. That 5.0 just seemed way too high.

Just know that as you get better at burning ketones that number may drop. Non T1 diabetics are safe until double digits typically and it is very hard to hit that high. Keep at it!
