Needing a little guidance for the Hubby!

(Jaidann) #1

Hey guys! I need a little help. Hubby has decided to go keto with me!! He’ll be keto 2 weeks on Saturday! He is doing a really good job. I’m so proud of him. But here is my snag … he drives a public transportation bus. They do not give him a lunch break. For him to eat it has to be grab and go. Something he can shove in his face at a bus stop and eat quickly.

So far I’ve managed to keep him full but I am running out of ideas. Most of the time he’s driving his bus for 12 hours straight. Getting a meal plan has been super difficult considering his limitations and lack of eating window. Here’s what I do so far for him. Sundays I cook up a weeks worth of stir fry steak and pork strips. Of course bacon!. Cheese slices and pepperoni and a handful of peanuts. Ya ya, I know lol … but baby steps with him or he will kill me. Am hoping to replace those with an actual nut at some point ;). I also make him cheescake fat bombs in cupcake papers so he can eat those.

I’m sort of running out of ideas to keep him interested. He likes crisp things like crackers and doritos because they are easily accessable. He can reach in grab a couple and munch. He doesn’t care for veggies and the ones he does like he shouldn’t have, like corn! He’s just more of a carnivore in that regard.

Anyone have any ideas that could help me out? Thank you!!!

My go to would be things like nuts, cheese and meats in this situation. Does he actually get bored with the same thing all the time or is he not fussed? I could happily have the same thing every day. I would only worry if he is moaning. He might be happy with the same thing???

He doesn’t seem to be fussed yet. I may be creating a problem before there is one. He’s actually loving he can eat all this stuff lol. I think I might be preparing myself for the “i’m bored with this food” conversation that may actually not come. I just need him to hang in there to get his A1C down and his HDL up and I think I might be trying to do it by giving him more variety that he may just not need.

Does he like cheese?

Not sure where you are based but pork rinds (scratchings in the UK) are my go to snack food.
You can also grill some cold meats like salami to crisp them up a bit too… Italian ham also makes good crunchy crisps.

Pork rinds he’s not fond of :open_mouth: But those cheese crisps are interesting! I think he’d like those. I’ll have to try some in my oven though as I don’t have one of those nifty silicon thingamajigs. Thank you for the idea!

nothing to do with food…but where does he work that they don’t let him take a lunch break? Doesn’t sound legal.

(Jaidann) #7

I know. I’ve questioned this before and don’t understand it. He actually works for the city but it seems every time this is challenged they win so I don’t know.

Chicken thighs & drumsticks, meatballs, hard boiled eggs, sardines, pork rinds + guacamole … plenty of grab and go options

Might be a good time to introduce him to IF.

Keto Chow has been a godsend a number of times in my keto journey. I was working 60+ hrs a week at my last job, and barely even had time to go home and pass out. There was absolutely no way I was going to cook dinner plus the next day’s lunch every night.

It’s a low carb meal replacement drink that tastes like a melted milkshake. I love the cookies and cream flavor, but they’re all good. You can get a sample pack to try all the flavors. It does need refrigeration as you add heavy cream when you mix it, however he can use a hydroflask to keep it cool if he doesn’t have access to a fridge. You can read more about it on their blog, or reddit.

pecans— could try a spicy recipe or my favorite (cinnamon, sweetener, and butter) I melt butter then add sweetener, cinnamon, and a little vanilla. Bake them in the over for a few minutes on 350. I portion them out after they’re out of the oven.

peanut butter? they make the small cups if you can find them.

cheese sticks/ pepperoni

send him off in the morning with a BPC (or hot choc if he’s not a coffee drinker) and a couple quick snacks for later in the day?

I’m a fan of the cheese stick, pepperoni, and almonds combo. Some of the Blue Diamond almond flavors have a remarkably low net amount of carbs and are quite flavorful. My current fave is the Sriracha flavor. Not so hot or salty it would disrupt his job, just enough to be interesting.

Wow … many thanks you guys for the ideas! It’s helped a lot. These ideas will help him from getting bored. We did have a sit down chat last night and I questioned him a ton and he says he’s happy and well satisfied. Not bored yet … there was that operative word … “yet” lol. So I’m going to take these ideas on bored and start rotating a few things out and adding some in. That should keep him happy!

One of my go-to snacks is <a href=https://www.walmart.com/ip/44391374?wmlspartner=wlpa&adid=22222222227037240828&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=74155710169&wl4=pla-164644784209&wl5=9011563&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=8175035&wl11=online&wl12=44391374&wl13=&veh=sem>Duke’s Sausage Sticks as they are very low in sugar and carbs. Get the original as they are the lowest.

Also, if he purchases anything, most hamburger places will do a bunless double cheeseburger without any issues!
