Need some assistance with my first longer Fast

(I Am The Egg Man ku-ku-kachoo) #1

Hi all.

A little background:

  • Started keto diet June 1st.
  • Ketosis came in 2-3 days and been there since.
  • Fat Adaptation came in (I think) about 4 weeks.
  • Weight has come off pretty easily so far.
  • Loss of appetite naturally led to an IF lifestyle.
  • Typically eat 1x or 2x a day, usually in a 4-6 hour window.
  • Adjusted my eating so that I only would eat if hungry. I stay very low carb (<20), hit my proteins (80-120g/day), fats to satiety.
  • Ordered The Obesity Code and started reading this last week. Very interesting so far, but haven’t had time to delve further.

Now the issue:
I’m not educated enough to do so, but I started a longer fast Sunday. I ate eggs and chorizo abt noon, with the intent of eating again around 4pm that day. But i wasn’t hungry so I said “I’ll do my first 24 hour fast”.
Well, here I am on Tuesday… 48 hours later and still going. My hunger is minimal. I feel fine…normal for me. Energy is good. No dizziness. I had a small BM this morning.
My fasting BG (on metformin as I’m T2) was 72, about the same as yesterday. Normal for me. However, my midday BG yesterday was 115 (Why??). Heartrate has dropped…more. Pre-keto it was about 70. Post-keto it’s been about 52-55. My doctor knew this and said “Great!”. Today it was 47.

My question(s):

Should I end this fast? If not, when?
How do I end a fast? How much do I eat and of what? Is it better to end early in the day or later? Should I go straight to a 1x or 2x a day eating schedule even if I’m not hungry?

Sorry, I’m sure I should know much of this BEFORE starting a fast but this sneaked up on me.

Up to you, you know yourself and your body/medical history better but I would go longer if you feel okay and your doctor is okay with it.

I would eat something mild like brie cheese and ease into eating more. I’ve read you don’t want to fast too frequently or for too long especially when you’re new to it.

Thanks Grinch.

Yeah, I was thinking that even if the results of doing this are favorable, I’d still only do it once every couple weeks. Just enough to keep my body guessing…

Otherwise, I’ll keep doing the IF thing.

It really is up to you when you choose to end your fast.
I am on hour 61, feel fantastic, no headaches, I am just going to keep going until I feel it’s right to eat again.
Currently 5 pounds down on this fast.

Thanks Katie.

I ended it tonight at 54 hours. I wasnt hungry, but I was little worried I was doing something harmful. I’ll finish reading The ObesityCode before doing anything more than OMAD.

I ate a “hash” of squash, sausage and an egg. I was full very quickly and felt a tiny bit queasy after eating, but feel fine now. I’ll probably do 1 meal tomorrow, around 18 hours from this meal.

Pretty sure it’s normal for it to drop significantly while fasting. I just finished day 3 of water wasting (did a dry fast day yesterday)… mine always lowers when fasting.

Thanks Shelly.
Today my BG is up a few ticks to where it normally is… Abt 78.

Sidenote: I suffered no ill effects from my fast. Ate lightly last night, am hungryish today but am holding off for an 18-6. No weird BM or other intestinal issues.

My blood sugar will dip into the 60s when fasting for longer than a few days. I don’t know any longer what a “normal” blood sugar is for me, as mine is typically elevated in the morning (over 100) then goes down all day until night when it reaches its lowest point.

Bob, that’s what I’m finding. My BG is highest either right away or maybe an hour after I wake, then it dribbles down throughout the day… During my fast.

Happens to me too, for both fasting days and eating days. The difference is in the starting point: if I fast multiple days, my blood sugar in the morning will be lower than if I ate the day before. The pattern is the same, though.

Two weeks ago I would have doubted I’d ever be able to sample what it feels like to fast for “multiple days”, but after two weeks in a row of doing a 48+ hour fast I’m not so sure!

I just feel good and clear and my blood sugars are as stable as can be on day 2… Maybe soon.
