Need help with large beef bones

#1

I have about 5 pounds of marrow bones. They’re not cut lengthwise (canoe-style) so they’re whole. They’re about 6-7” long each, so fairly large.

I want to roast them for the marrow. I do not want to make beef broth (I have plenty).

I have an oven and instant pot.

What is my best option to get the marrow cooked and out of them? I’m thinking of putting them on a roasting pan at 425* for about 45 minutes? I’m not sure how well the instant pot would work here since I’d have to add some water to the pot. But, I would suspect that 30 minutes in the instant pot would do it.

Any suggestions? My priorities are to get the marrow out to eat/store it in fridge, not gastronomic perfection

Get a saw. Any hand saw wil work, as long if it’s clean. A power saw will work also, but it has to be cleaned well afterwards. freeze the bones, the cut into four to six inch lengths or shorter. Yours may just have to be cut in half. Another option is using a large hammer to crack them open. If you want to be true paleo, use a rock.

If possible, next time have a butcher cut them up with his band saw.

Yeah, I was thinking the saw route too. Unfortunately, I don’t have any clean blades. I bought these frozen from the farm so no option for smaller pieces. I’m just going to have to roast the heck out of them…

I’d go the hammer route. Wrap’em in several layers of plastic first, and use eye protection.
