Need Help with Energy!

I read on a different page that the ranch seasoning packets were OK, but I guess serving size is only 1/2 teaspoon while I used a whole tablespoon.

As for the lemon dill aioli, I made it myself with equal parts mayo, Greek yogurt, fresh lemon juice, dill, salt, and pepper. I believed the mayo and yogurt was good on keto? But I definitely see where you’re coming from - the more simpler, the better, so you avoid hidden carbs.

What’s awesome is that I have never dieted or watched what I ate for the past 25 years of my life. I was indeed a gluttonous and hungry fool! Well, not hungry but just loved to eat.

I love this way of “dieting” (I really see it as a huge life change in approaching and seeing foods differently) because I plan for my day with my app. Since I had creamed cabbage that is really carby, I have to avoid eating a cookie with dinner.

And BEER. There has been absolutely nothing in this world that could steer me away from picking up a cold brew after work and on the weekends. But now, I have to be conscious and think if the even low carb beers are worth it to add to my daily intake of macros. I’m so impressed with myself!

#43

For sure!

Growing up, my mom would always tell me to steer away from too much red meat. That it will cause cancer and age you quickly.

#44

Thank you!

A lot of people seem to be good with very simple meat and be happy, but I honestly love veggies.

Giving up fries, pizza, chips, bread, bagels, etc. and limiting certain types of starchy veggies is already tough on it’s own. I don’t think I can cut our vegetables completely, so thanks! I’m glad to know that if I go over a little in carbs because of healthy veggies, I don’t need to beat myself up!

Hi!

So I’m not sure if I’m using app correctly or if the foods I pick from the options provided is based on commercially packed foods or not, but both my creamed cabbage and aioli was made from home!

Creamed cabbage with onions and very small amounts of green peppers. Mixed in heavy 1/2 cup whipping cream, 5 Oz cream cheese, 1/2 cup sour cream topped with parm and baked in oven for 20 mins.

Lemon aioli was equal parts mayo + Greek yogurt, fresh lemon juice, dill, and salt / pepper.

So do you think the Carb Manager is calculating incorrectly? Or I’m just using the wrong ones? The pork and cabbage recipe was on the Diet Doctor’s website and said a serving was 11g, so I thought it was close enough.

There’s also an option to enter in your meals but it’s quite extensive in terms of nutrition facts, and I wasn’t sure if I had to fill them out completely so just opted for the type and find option.

Also, that’s wonderful to hear about your journey! Congratulations! I can’t wait till the winter is over so I can jog and go riding.

It looks like you already saw that you can create your own food in Carb Manager. (My foods, Recipes, Create Recipe.) I found this really handy for my favorite recipes that use a lot of ingredients. It is a bit of a pain to enter it at first but if it’s a personal favorite it’ll a) Give you the knowledge of what you are actually eating in terms of carbs, fat, and protein and b) Make future logging super easy. It also allowed me to see where I could tweak the recipe to lessen carbs and it gave me a better understanding of serving size. It is cumbersome (saving complex recipes). And logging in general is time consuming. But it kind of trained me as far as what fit and what didn’t fit with this WOE. I go through periods of logging everything and then I don’t need to for a while but when I decide to log again my favorites are still in there. Good luck!

How much onion was in the creamed cabbage? Onion is pretty high in carbs so many people recommend using them sparingly for flavor.

So, 6 grams of carbs in the seasoning mix alone, now you know. As for yogurt, it can be carby as well, depending on how much you used and if it was full-fat or not. There are bulk recipes on the internet for homemade ranch seasoning mix that skip the maltodextrin and anti-caking agents, if you really want the flavor. You’d still need to count the carbs, but at least you’d know what was in it. And yes, the simpler the better especially when starting out.

#49

Thank you! Do you enter in all the other information as well? Or just the protein, fat, carbs?

I briefly glanced at the option where you enter everything in and the list was LONG! Immediately thought, “nope”, and went back.

#50

And when you do enter your own stuff, how do you break every single ingredient down? Or do you just calculate based on X amount of veggies is X amount of carbs while the meat is X, etc. basically do all the math on your own. Because that does indeed sound a bit tedious but I suppose it depends on how committed you are to logging accurately.

#51

I can’t recall, I’m sure it was over a cup - I love onions! But it was mostly cabbage. I will have to remember that as I tend to go overboard with onions. Garlic isn’t too high in carbs, is it?

#52

Oh my! That explains a lot. Thanks for doing the math for me.

(Khara) #53

I agree. There is one area where you are entering everything… calcium, phosphorus, iron… sigh. No, not this area. Instead go to Create Recipe. With create recipe you can use the search option still. So if one ingredient is sour cream, you find that (hopefully the exact brand) and enter it along with the amount used. You can scan the barcode on most food packages to ensure they are available in your food search. Enter all ingredients along with number of servings and save it with a name. You can then easily find this to log.
I tried to find you in the app to see if I could share a recipe example with you but I can’t figure out how to find a specific person. I’m a little out of practice with that app.

(Khara) #54

With this method, no math on your own is involved. Just the time it takes you to enter in all the ingredients. Once you’ve created recipes you’ll have a list like this that you can choose from when you are logging.

#55

I’m barely 3 days in, so no worries!

Thank YOU SO MUCH! I def think I went to the wrong area like you mentioned. How am I supposed to find all that info on my own in a timely manner :joy:

Awesome, so create a recipe is not as bad. Just search and add.

#56

OOOOh are those your recipes / pictures?!

(Khara) #57

Ya, you can add pictures too! So that’s kind of fun. It’s been a while since I saved a new recipe. I remember it being a little tedious at first but then you’ll figure out the quirks of the app and get a rhythm down. Have fun!

Be careful with anything that grows under the ground, that is where plants store their energy in the form of sugar. But since we use much less garlic than other things it is usually okay.

One cup of onion is 15.3 net carbs plus 2.8 fiber, so 18.1 total carbs from one ingredient.

When you learn things like this, don’t worry about it. Just use the information going forward. And onion is fine. Just be aware of how much and decide if it is in your carb budget for the day.

#59

Okay, can someone please give me some advice?

I ventured to the “What did you Keto today?” thread so I can see what other people were eating on a daily basis.

So I’m seeing MASS amounts of food on people’s plates. ie) huge bowl of roasted veggies, hefty sized meat, tomato slices, 2 slices of cheese, 4 deviled eggs, handful of olives and pickles or heaping of meat and veggies with cheese.

Yesterday, I compared the carb count for a meal of salmon, broccoli, and cheese. It was the same as a can of tuna, 3 cup mixed green salad, 1 cup of cucumber, 1/2 cup of cherry tomatoes, and 1 tablespoon of balsamic vinaigrette which came out to be around 6g. So how are people eating huge portions of salad, eggs, keto bread, meat, etc. and stay under 20g if their meals are that big 2-3X a day?!

I am eating WAY less than that per meal, and I still sometimes go over my daily carb intake. Are people eating these huge meals only 1-2X a day? Or I’m wondering if Carb Calculator is inaccurate… someone mentioned above that one of my meal did not seem like 12g, so I’m worried I’m not eating enough or my carbs count is all wonky.

Thank you!

(Khara) #60

Likely they aren’t eating 2-3x per day. Maybe more like 1-2x.
