Need help, high BG and flu-like symptoms

(Denise) #1

I really need some help, and I do have a doc appt. Monday a.m. as well. They don’t understand keto, and what they do know is how to write prescriptions, but right now, I have a sore throat since leaving the hospital, and body aches/pains not horrific, but I am super dragging my body around, legs feel wobbly.

I’ve been back on my keto diet, under 10 g of carbs, the rest my healthy fats and protein. Same foods I ate for about the last 2 years or my 4 years on keto.

I was in the hospital for pancreatitis, so the doc called it, pain subsided after first night there. But, they kept me in way up until the following Saturday. I didn’t feel this bad until about a day or two being home, did feel some slight symptoms though.

I don’t feel well at all, and today my BG was 139 or 7.7 mmol, after 16 hour fast, I didn’t eat anything at all after 3:30pm yesterday. yesterday numbers were the same at 7:30 and a little later at 8:30 a.m. it was down to 5.4 or 99.

This a.m. I’ve taken tsp of fresh garlic when I first got up around 6 a.m. Then I’ve drank my decaf with 1/4 cup of Almond milk, unsweetened, 1 tsp of turmeric, 1/8 tsp of ginger, and cinnamon, and tablespoon of half and half.

I have checked my bg on my coffee mixture but never got bad numbers, alway in safe zone.

They fed me about 30 g of carbs every day, called it “their” light keto. If anyone can help me possibly understand all this, I would so appreciate it. I almost wonder if I got kicked out of ketosis, and I have the same flu symptoms when I first started keto, I do not remember them being like these entirely though, or this bad, denise

I almost forgot, I took garlic lastnight, and Vit C, 1g, and zinc 50 mg. Trying to fight this flu thing,

I think you have to see the doctor. The pancreas has the cells that create insulin (lowers blood sugar) and glucagon (raises blood sugar), so maybe the pancreas is still inflamed?

This takes too long to get to the point, but it describes what the pancreas does with these two hormones:

And it might not be your pancreas per se, but could be covid, the flu, etc.

Yes, I plan to go to my 10 a.m. appt. Monday, but they also ask if I’ve felt sick, and not to come in if I know I’m sick, rock and a hard place. I’ll google, or GP chat and ask what meds they give for possible “still” inflamed pancreas. Thanks @ctviggen for the link, I’ll take a look. BTW, 139 was about my daily number while in hospital. It starting getting back in normal number after I got home. But then this 139 2-days in a row on fasting BG.

I think you may be sick From being in the hospital, that you picked up some bug your body’s fighting. Found this:

“When you’re sick, your blood sugar levels tend to rise due to the body’s stress response and the release of hormones like cortisol and epinephrine. These hormones increase glucose production in the liver to provide energy to fight off the infection, but they also make it harder for your body to use insulin effectively, leading to higher blood sugar. This effect is more pronounced in people with diabetes who may already have difficulty managing their blood sugar.”

Thank you so much, I wasn’t looking for the right thing to google, I so appreciate this.

I just got up and took my fasting (after 14 hours, not even tea) and it’s at 115, still high, but lower thank God. I feel a lot better from the flu’y symptoms as well, both lastnight, and this am. Funny the doc never mentioned that once in with the high numbers I was having with the pancreatitis hey, no surprise!! denise

Yes, I agree, this makes sense with my brain/body very well :heart_eyes:

I’m going ahead with my flu remedies now that I don’t think they have anything to do with my symptoms, so garlic clove, echinacea, turmeric, Vit C, and Zinc this a.m. and I’ll check my BG again after those things. I think the garlic really has helped, but maybe all of the above.

Thank you both so much, denise

Well that didn’t go well  After the garlic, decaf concoction (only 1/2) I took my BG at 1 hour later and it was 132 mg/dl, or 7.3 mmol.

6:30 was my fasting

8:25 was one hour after the above stuff. I don’t feel afraid, except I’m not going to do an HbA1c for them at this point. I feel pretty strongly I will get back to my normal, and I’m not stopping my alt. meds for flus and cold. I don’t believe it’s them raising bg, but my illness. I am better this a.m. but not out of the woods yet

I am keeping strict records, but not showing doctors in the dark with they’re pills. I should say, I know we have knowledgeable doctors, most seem to be online and I don’t know my insurance would cover any of those.

I have to have a GP, and a cardio because of my insurance, but I don’t have to take their pills. They can’t make me, and may refuse to remain my doctors, but I can’t help that. This is “my” life and I will allow testing like a CAC or NMR about my high ldl, that’s all they get tomorrow.
