Need advice on my stall - not eating enough

(Seth S.) #1

Hi everyone,
A few months into keto I got fat adapted and naturally slipped into OMAD, like a lot of people do. I studied up on how I’m supposed to keep switching it up if I want weight loss, because once I fell into that pattern the loss stopped entirely. So a couple of weeks ago I started mixing it up, doing 16:8 some days, OMAD other days, and 3 meals on a couple of days. However, I’ve stayed stalled out, and it’s very frustrating.
I know one problem is not eating enough when I do eat — a typical dinner will be a thick-cut pork chop (cooked in lots of butter) and salad with fatty ranch dressing, often with coffee & hwc. After I’ve had that, I’m full, but when I look up the calories for that meal I see it’s pretty low. And on the one hand I know it’s not all about calories, but on the other hand I see folks on here pointing out how people aren’t eating enough, so I’m kind of confused!
I don’t know if this is clear enough to be something people can respond to; it’s more just an essay about my frustration than anything.

After a really long stall I lost 4 lbs (I only wanted to lose 3 stubborn final lbs) doing a bacon and egg fast for 3 days. That was 2 weeks ago and the weight did not come back after going back to regular keto! Research it

Hello,
I was stalled for 4 months. That scale didn’t budge. The feeling of wellness persisted, my non scale victories continued, I knew I was on the right path but the dang needle didn’t budge. August to November no loss. 2 weeks into December and I am down 6 pounds. I didn’t sit idly by either - kept coming up with new strategies. Started a squat challenge - who knows what triggered it. I am no keto expert, but i do believe the body can only do one thing at a time. I believe that keto was healing what ails me and is now shedding my excess. Good luck to you.

I am wondering how close to your goal weight you are?

If you ate this meal 3 times in one day I would probably say it’s quite a few calories. On OMAD, sure it doesn’t seem like a lot. I might try eating more protein and a little less fat to see if that gets things moving better. Certainly fat has more calories than protein but protein is probably just as satiating and this will give your body a chance to use more body fat instead of ingested fat.

I believe patterns of consistently low amounts of food is what we should avoid. Mixing in some really high (quality) amounts of food on some days is going to remind your hormones that giving up some fat is nothing to worry about.

Here’s more ideas that might help:

Thank you everybody! Really very helpful suggestions. I’ll let y’all know what works! First thing is eating more eggs. I need to get over my egg dislike.

There’s a dozen different ways to eat eggs. A boiled egg tastes so much different than an egg over easy.

I’m struggling with this too. A month ago I declared myself at goal. Haven’t been there since the day I said it. I’ve tried eating more the past couple days and ended up putting on a couple more pounds.

But, my measurements have stayed the same. (Except for this last jump where I inexplicably gained a couple centimeters in the bust‽ I guess I shouldn’t complain.) I have been better about kettle bell swings 2-3 times a week, but only for the past two weeks, so doesn’t seem like I’d gain that much muscle in that time.

So I’m currently one day in to a planned three day fast since I haven’t done one in a few weeks. Normally I go back to regular keto after a fast, but I’m thinking about the bacon and egg protocol for an additional three days hmmmm… Gotta shake it up!

Have you tried feasting to rev up your metabolism followed by an extended fast, say 3-5 days?

I remember listening to one of the podcasts where they say people naturally start to calorie restrict when they’re fat adapted as the body starts eating more stored fat. Have you noticed any other measurement going up or down? My weight loss had slowed but I can visibly see I’m adding muscle so I’m not concerned about my scale weight at the moment.

Was this to me or the OP? Anyway I gues we can both answer!

I do a 3 or so day fast at least once a month, and I’m doing one now. All other measurements have held steady within a centimeter variance up and down. Bust measurements don’t really mean anything cause boobs are weird that way.

So hopefully it is just muscle building. Still want to get those final pounds off though.

Oh extended fasting is definitely not for me. I’ve got about 30 more lbs to go, and I’d rather it go slowly than do an EF. I totally understand the benefits and appreciate other folks’ EF journeys though.

But this week I did get a lot better on a couple of things - keeping my fasting time 100% clear of calories (no HWC in my coffee etc) and not eating at all outside meals - I’d let myself get too free with the keto-friendly snacks. Now I’m being really strict about only eating at mealtimes, and allowing at least 4 hours between meals. And this week the scale finally started to tick downward again, down 4 lbs from last week! Thanks everybody! Hopefully this will continue downward.

there are tons of good recipes out there to eat eggs without them tasting like eggs! My favorites are crepes (egg/cream cheese/cinnamon) , and frozen custard!

I meant that as a reply to the reply about eating more eggs…
