Nausea after eating

Hi,
I’m still relatively new to keto. I started at the beginning of may. Everything has been going great. I have more energy so I’ve been able to reduce medications and supplements. I’ve only been eating one or two meals a day and fasting in between. Recently though I’ve been feeling really nauseas when I first start to eat. Especially after fasting over night. I’m wondering how to check for electrolyte balance because when I chew salt it seems to get a bit better. I’m not getting leg cramps at night and I’m drinking a ton of water. Does anyone have any thoughts on why this keeps happening? I’m not doing this for weight loss… I’m trying to rebuild my mitochondria and be more metabolically adapted. Maybe I’m fasting too long? Any thoughts would be appreciated…

My guess is low stomach acid which can be a side effect of fasting. Try breaking your fast with a mug of bone broth to rouse your digestive system. After about 15 minutes, have your meal but eat a smaller amount. After an hour, if you are still hungry you can eat more.

You could get a blood test and that can tell exactly what your electrolytes levels are but for the most part, feeling off is a good indication that something isn’t right. The key to proper electrolyte levels is sodium. Sodium helps balance other electrolytes and we need to get 2+ teaspoons of salt per day when our insulin levels stay low. We don’t hold onto sodium as well when we restrict carbs.

@CarlKeller, your advice on salt cured my nausea when fasting. I’ve been Keto over 12 months and always learning. My teenagers are disgusted seeing me ingest salt crystals and I do worry about the stash in my handbag…if the police search me I will send them your way!

I love this forum- have had this exact issue myself.
I have been nauseated and vomited x 2 in the past week and a half on my first meal after a fast. Just a sudden onset of nausea as I am eating or immediately after, a chucking up of the meal looking much as it did minutes ago - it isnt even.particularly gross as not acidic or with bile, literally just chewed food comes back…
and then nothing, other than feeling a bit physically low and out of sorts for a few hours afterward.
Salt perhaps as Carl suggests. I have been struggling with fasting last few weeks too. Its all just a process of tweaking to get it right - as things change you just have to change along to flow with it.

Haha. It will be funny when they send the mysterious bag of pink crystals to the lab for analysis.

Thanks guys! The nausea has been pretty bad. I looked into electrolyte tabs to add to my water but they had sugar in them. I sometimes drink calm magnesium drink too but usually at night. I guess I’ll just keep chewing salt and drinking a ton of water.
