My purpose to go Keto. Am I on the right track?

Hello everyone.

Last month I heard the word Keto for the first time and started to get a know how about it and was contemplating whether I should go for it.
A little bit about me.

Male / 29.5 years old / Active cycling during summer and skiing during winters.
I am a chocoholic. I cannot go a day without icecream/candy/chocolate. I do not drink.

I come from South Asia where bread and rice are an integral part of daily routine. Either once of them are present either in lunch or supper. But I now live in North America.

My problem due to all this is that I have been gaining belly fat. A lot of it during the last year as the pictures show (by the way sorry if they gross you out but I wanted to show my real condition)

So this belly fat is something I am trying to get rid of. I understand that there is fat that need to GO ! And the best way to do so is to burn it. Either actively, biking rigorously OR by controlling my diet.

Today is my 3rd day in Keto kind of mode. I have not eaten bread or rice in the past 3 days. I have not touched ice cream or chocolate either. God knows how I managed to do that. My focus has solely been on Olive oil friend veggies.
There is so much for me to sort out about food but its a good thing I stumbled across this forum today.

So my question to this community is that with Keto, and if I religiously follow it, will I be able to lose considerable belly fat in, say, a year ? Is the Keto way the solution to my problem ?

Good for you for starting keto. I can’t say for sure that it will work for you, but from what I have read, it probably will if you stick to 20grams of carbs (mostly from veg or dairy, not sweets!) per day. Moderate protein, fat to satiety. Luckily you are a guy, and guys usually lose faster. Read up on this forum and keep calm and keto on.

Keeping your carbohydrate below 20 g/day will keep your insulin secretion to a minimal level, which will permit your adipose tissue to release excess fat to be metabolized. I effortlessly lost sixty pounds of fat from various locations on my body but still have quite a bit of belly fat I’d like to lose. I have noticed two things, however: first, the fat seems to be leaving in reverse order of arrival, so I expect that some of the remaining belly will take some time to leave. Second, even though my weight has remained the same for quite some time, my body is still changing, and the fat is lessening. So time and patience will be your friends on this journey. Good luck, and let us know how it goes.

Just want to emphasize what Paul said. You will lose fat, but don’t get discouraged if belly fat is not the first to go. Like Paul said, most people lose fat in the opposite way they gained and it seems to go from the extremities to the core.

That being said, I’m sure you will lose a lot of belly fat, just know what to expect. Also I know many people have the fat around their organs clear up right away (think fatty liver), so even if you don’t see inches lost around the waist right away, you are going to be so much healthier.

If you need a treat a square or two of VERY dark chocolate can be a healthy part of your way of eating. Look for at least 85% cocoa. Above 90% is better. But only if you think you can control yourself to one or two squares. But this is easier with very dark chocolate than with lighter chocolates. I also sometimes put unsweetened cocoa powder and heavy whipping cream in my coffee.

Thank everyone ! Im going to stick to this for atleast 2 months to start off with and then re evaluate. I understand that there wont be a drastic change overnight but atleast it will start giving me a bit of indication that this diet is working. So its Keto-ing on for now .

Many times chocolate cravings are a magnesium deficiency. I could eat a dump truck of chocolate if somebody let me. Been like that since I’ve been a kid. Still love chocolate obviously, but that insane craving to it is gone now. Weirdly enough the last couple days I’ve been making me “keto chocolate milks” which I haven’t done in forever and eating a couple heseys sugar free chocolate chips a lot more than usual, checked the last 2 weeks average of my intake in cronometer and sure enough my magnesium has been flying down the whole time!

My chocolate craving was a direct result of the sugar content. I don’t crave unsweetened chocolate at all. I can enjoy a couple of squares with no urge to eat more.
